SageTV Client functionality clarifications

I'm trying to get a better grasp of how SageTV and Client interact. If I've missed the answers to the following questions, please point me to them. (Have I missed the link to the manuals??)

1) Is the Client used only to watch live TV or previously recorded programs on another computer? i.e. Can it be used to mark a show so that SageTV will record it?

2) Can the Client computer make use of an installed tuner? Or, does any computer that has a tuner need SageTV? i.e. What software is needed if multiple systems have tuners?

1. Yes, the client user interface has all the functionality of the SAgeTV allowing you to watch live TV as well as any recorded shows. You can record, and setup/manage favorites to record in the the exact same manner as SageTV (server).

2. Short answer, yes you can have a tuner installed on the client, and yes you can have one SageTV server controlling the tuners on all machines. Somone better versed in the network encoding should step in here.

The manuals are available for download on the sage.tv website, and are also incldued in the trial downloads.

Just to clarify. The SageTV client will NOT take advantage of an installed tuner. You would need to install SageRecorder on the SageTV Client machine and setup network encoding. When this is done the SageTV Server can utilize this additional tuner. And then the SageTV Client will be able to make use of it.

I have the setup that Gerry Descibes and it works very well. From theSageTV and SageTVClient interface it appears as if I have 4 Captures cards in my server where SageTV is installed when actually I have 3 installed and one is on the client pc.

Thanks everyone! Between those comments & the manuals that I now found, I believe I understand the network functionality.

Dan -- I had read the downloads page, but must have read it when it was too close to time for sleep. For the benefit of future users, I would like to suggest that the manual download links be broken out into a list, as the program download links are. Thanks.

You know... I've been reading the old messages on this forum as part of my research & have seen many comments regarding the responsiveness of the owners. I couldn't resist looking at the downloads page, out of curiosity, after making my suggestion quoted above... and what do I see but that the manual links are now broken out into a their own list!

It is nice to see such quick action, even on the simple things.
