Contacting MediaMVP BootServer...
I have a new installation of Sage 5.0.4.92, and I am trying to get an MVP media extender to connect to the server. I've been reading lots of posts about MVP issues but I cannot seem to resolve the problem, even with all the suggestions out there so far.
I've enabled media extender in the Sage advanced setup, and I am running the application as a service in Windows 2000. The device is getting an IP address from my UNIX DHCP server, and I can ping the MVP. But it's just stuck saying "Contacting MediaMVP BootServer..." on the screen. I temporarily installed the Hauppauge MediaMVP software and the extender device booted right up, so I think the hardware is fine. I've enabled debugging in sage.properties, and I can see the connection attempts to the server from the media extender, but it never downloads the mvp.bin boot file. I get the following, just repeating over and over in the Sage debug log every 8 seconds: Tue 6/20 3:56:23.053 Received bootp request Tue 6/20 3:56:23.054 Op:1 hwtype:1 hwaddrlen:6hopcount:0 transaction:-231119849 nSeconds:100 flags:0 MAC: 00:0d:fe:00:62:25 Tue 6/20 3:56:23.055 Matched request to client 0 Tue 6/20 3:56:23.056 servername 67.110.191.184 Tue 6/20 3:56:23.056 Sending bootp reply Tue 6/20 3:56:32.102 Received bootp request Tue 6/20 3:56:32.103 Op:1 hwtype:1 hwaddrlen:6hopcount:0 transaction:256720327 nSeconds:100 flags:0 MAC: 00:0d:fe:00:62:25 Tue 6/20 3:56:32.103 Matched request to client 0 Tue 6/20 3:56:32.104 servername 67.110.191.184 Tue 6/20 3:56:32.105 Sending bootp reply Things I've tried, without success: 1) Upgraded JVM from 1.4.2_11 to 1.5.0_06 2) Added the miniserver/clients=MVP/<MAC>/<IP> and miniserver/gateway=<GW_IP> to sage.properties 3) No windows firewall to deal with since I'm using Windows 2000 Does anyone have any suggestions? An update
I was able to get the MVP working by moving the Sage server and MVP to a different switch/router that is using a private class-C network (192.168.8.0/24).
Does anyone know if Sage either (1) has problems with public IP addresses which is what I was trying to use before, or (2) with non-class-C subnets (my public network is /27 with mask 255.255.255.224)? One or both of these must have been causing the problem. But I'd like to figure it out so I can move the devices back to my other network. Bryan |

Solution/Workaround
Just to update anyone who is following this thread, I tracked down the problem to the subnet mask of the SageTV server. The bootp process for booting the MVP only works if the SageTV server has a netmask of 255.255.255.0.

I am having trouble getting my wireless mvp working. My older wired one works fine still.
SageTV server 5.0.4 My local subnet at home here is 172.16.1.x. Can I update sage for this subnet? |

You should be able to get your MVP to run on that subnet.
I found the thread that had the discussions about the subnet difficulties that people were having, http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/show...private+subnet , and Opus4 was using that same subnet. That was during the SageV4.1 days. |

Has anyone come up with a solution for this yet?
All I get it is Contacting MediaMVP BootServer... then to Contacting DHCP Server and back and forth. I've read through all the posts here and feel like I've tried them all, but really didn't see any conclusive answers. I changed my LAN IP's to 192.168.1.xx and assigned static IP's to all 4 of the computers on the LAN including the SageTV machine I added the lines suggested to my Sage.Properties file (which revert back to the properties file before I added these lines once I restart SageTV & Service) I don't have any firewalls on I do have Port Forwarding setup on the router. I have: 31099 - 31100 16867 - 16869 7818 - 7818 42024 - 42024 forwarding to the IP of the SageTV machine. The last 2 were mentioned in the v5 manual, I thought it couldn't hurt. I am using SageTV V5.0.4.92 with SageMC 6.7 and MediaMVP v1.0 Rev D3A. The one strange thing I was thinking of was when I orginally set this up I remember going through the Config Wizard and there was a step that asked about setting up the placeshifter and for it to see if it could connect. I don't remember that step very well since I only went through it once, but I do remember it connecting where it was supposed to. Also in the manual it says to make sure that in Detailed Setup>Advanced make sure Media Extenders and Placeshifters were enabled. When I go into that screen, all I see is an option to Enable SageTV Server, which is enabled. Is there a way I should be able to go through the Placeshifter setup again? Sometimes I can't believe SageTV is so difficult to figure out. Thanks in advance for helping me through this. |

Thank you so much for the reply K. I would have never figured that out.
Versions must come out REALLY fast. I just installed 6.7 a couple of weeks ago. I am going to update to 6.8 right away. Thanks again!! |

Ok, well after updating to 6.8a I got further this time. I was able to see Loading Application, but then it goes right back to Contacting MediaMVP BootServer... then to Contacting DHCP Server.
I shut down SageTV & the Service and changed the Sage.properties file to this: miniserver/automvp=true miniserver/clients=MVP/00:0d:fe:00:59:ed/192.168.1.104 miniserver/gateway=192.168.1.101 I started the service only to see what happens to the file and the MAC address line changes to: miniserver/clients=MVP/00\:0d\:fe\:00\:59\:ed/192.168.1.104 I KNOW I'm missing something and I spent the morning searching this thread to try and figure out what I am missing, but I can't find anything. Thanks again. |

I would suggest deleting the "clients" folder and always work to get the original SageTV3.xml with NO other plugins added working first before changing to any other STV or adding plugins.

I reverted back to the orginal SageTV3.xml. Still not working. Thanks again Quick question: I purchased the SageTV Media Center with Placeshifter License Combo. Did I get the wrong thing? Do I need to get the Sage Client software also? Edit: To be more specific, I ordered SageTV Media Center with Placeshifter License Combo and received licences for a SageTV License Key & SageTV Media Extender License Key. The SageTV license is for the server/media center software and the Extender License will work for (i think) either an MVP, Client PC, or Placeshifter connection.

Correct, If I have my facts straight this time.... for the MVP you need a media extender license (1 per concurrent MVP connection) not a client license

Thanks hemicuda, at least I got that out of the way. I still a little bummed nobody can help me with this. I just have no idea what to do. Everything seems to be setup ok, but I'm sure I'm doing something wrong, I just don't know what.
I guess me next step would be to just re-install Sage and start over........again. |
