Sage 5.0x and .m4a audio
Sage is not reconizing files I encoded with Itunes into .m4a. Will it? Can it?
The reason I ask is because I have it hooked to a SDTV and Itunes has me going blind, so I thought I would playback in Sage until I get a new TV.

I don't think Sage supports aac directly, but if WMP or Winamp will play them, then you can use one of the plugins for them to play them.

Thanks, I didn't know of the the plug-ins, WMP won't do aac (thanks, i couldn't remember that either) I am not sure about Winamp.

The Winamp plugin was very difficult to setup imop and not worth the effort.
I really hope sage adds AAC support. I can't think of too many people I know that use mp3 anymore.

Exactly.
I myself prefer mp3's at 320kbit/s. ...and the entire DRM issue is for the birds. And... as an old timer... [39years old]... I have had and still have vinyl, 8tracks, cassettes... ugh... Nothing like a pristine copy of "Dark Side of The Moon" on the old Ortofon platter.
I have Itunes and still use it to p/u some new tracks, but really.... I don't dig the M4p DRM stuff. I end up burning it, ripping it back to mp3 and adding it to my library. I guess it would be nice to include a player for this in the Sage package. Someday, along with world peace, it would be nice to have a "standard" audio format. Until then, it's ogg vs. mp3 vs. wma vs. m4p vs ??? and so on. Ciao, Wirenut |

Just to clear something up, aac/m4a does not necessarilly mean DRM. It's perfectly possible to have m4a/aac files without DRM, just like it's possible to have wma files without DRM. The difference is that the latter formats support DRM.
However for my part, the whole lossy-compression thing is for the birds. Lossless or bust. |

Correct.
That's totally true.
aac/m4p need not be DRM'd. Wirenut |

Non-DRM'd AAC/M4A/etc. files will be supported in V5.1 as well as full metdata parsing as well (i.e. artist/title/album art/etc.)

Nice. It would be nice to have that in Sage.
As far as aac being more popular, I wouldn't know, I definately prefer it to mp3 though. As far as DRM, that is hardly an issue, I have few downloaded songs, if I like the it enough to have the album I still buy the CD, then immediately burn it to acc.

Thanks for that 5.1 update!
Yes to clear things up for people, my entire library is encoded in 160 AAC non-DRM. I personally think the sound quality is far superior to that of mp3 and the smaller file footprint is an added bonus. I used to use 192 mp3, but 160 AAC is equivalent to my ears of a 256+ mp3 and the file size is around that of a 128 mp3. DRM-wise i don't know what the big deal is. Everytime i buy any DRM'd file online I just end up burning it to CD-RW and then re-ripping it in my own formats. Takes care of that pesky DRM

I believe FLAC is part of the "etc" that Jeff included in his post, above.

I 2nd that!!! Full tagging for FLAC as well? That would be GREAT! Will this also work through the extenders and trigger on the fly transcoding for the music? This could be good enough for me to go back to Sage from MCE! Thanks, Mike |
