New Wireless MVP wont resolve IP
I just purchased a new wireless MVP, and I cannot get it to resolve an IP address.. When I hit apply on the Wireless setup page of the MVP it goes out and say "Checking Wireless Access Point" Then comes back after about 15 seconds and says that it was able to connect to my access point but was unable to obtain an IP address. It obviously sees my wireless network, it sees the SSID and channel. This is pissin me off...
I can connect and it works fine wired, but I can't get it to connect wireless.. I have even tried reserving all the routes in my router for my HTPC and the MVP. The router is a Netgear WGT624 Any help would be appreciated, this is really buggin me and annoying that I paid the extra money for this and it wont connect.. My PSP was 10 times easier to connect wirelessly then this thing.. Mike |

good luck!
All I can say is good luck. I have spent 3 weeks and countless hours on this topic and have the exact issues that you have with my system.
This product is very buggy and not ready for consumers. I am through throwing my time and money at it. I'll watch your thread here in hopes of an answer... |

If you can't get an IP then it usually means an issue with the wireless network. On the network status screen where it displayed all the networks it can see with a scan, what is the signal strength in db? The magic number seems to be around -50 or more (remember we are talking negative numbers, so -40 is higher then -50).
Where is your wireless router/ap in relation to your mvp? Can you try connecting the mvp to a tv in the same room as your wireless router/ap over the wireless connection and see if you can get an IP address then? Yes, Jester is having problems and so did I (and others). Sage has been able to resolve my problems in conjunction with changes I made to my wireless network to get my network up to speed. But Jester's and my problems are not the issue you are seeing (at least he has been stating that he has the "flashing mvp boot screen issue" unless he really has a "no IP address issue", which means everything we have been telling him to do is all wrong since to get to the "flashing boot screen" he needs an IP address). Yours appears to be a direct network related issue at this point or potentially a hardware issue with the mvp itself, but more likely a signal strength issue. Jester, I've asked a couple times in your thread, and I will ask again here. Could you post an overview of your network? I am just trying to see if there is something that we are overlooking as the cause of your probems. Edit: Jester nevermind my last question, I just saw your thread, "Starting over with clean install - do's and don'ts?"

see my other reply
Fallen,
Sorry to confuse you. I had the flashing screen issue with my original router (I still have it with my new Belkin NI if I connect the MVP in wired mode). With the new router, I have the IP address issue. So, I took two steps forward and one step back. Once I get past the IP address issue, I am fully prepared to fall back into the blinking boot screen since there is a hint that is not resolved either. FYI - My mvp is sitting on the floor in the same room as the router, the sage server, and the tv. I have the mvp connected to the front inputs on the same tv that runs the server so I can quickly switch back and forth to troubleshoot the system. It speeds this testing process up considerably. The family watches me sit there on teh floor night after night playing with the system. I hope to get it all working soon so they will understand it although I doubt that they will ever think it was worth all this trouble...I will not give up. |

Fallen Kell: My router is in the next room. I have a connection speed of -45db. Like I said it sees the wireless network, just wont resolve the IP. I have it set to G only, and the WEP is turned off..
Anyone else think it is a little ridiculous that you have to have your Wireless MVP with 20ft or so to make it work. Kind of defeats the purpose of having it Wireless doesn't it.. It works fine in Wired mode, but that's not why I bought the Wireless MVP. I have no troubles getting any other devices on my wireless network. Any other help or suggestions Thanks Mike Last edited by Mikeydog; 07-20-2006 at 12:25 PM. |

I really don't know why you can't resolve an IP address. There does seem to be some problems with D-Link routers and the wireless mvp, but you have a Netgear...
Do you happen to have another wireless router sitting around or one you can borrow? Can you try and see if you get an IP address when you are in the same room with your router? As for next steps, well, the first would be to use a tool like ethereal/wireshark to do a network capture when you try and boot your mvp. I recommend that you close all email, web browsers, p2p applications, etc., when you make the capture as well just so that we only see the network traffic being created by the mvp and your router trying to communicate.

can't get IP address -
Make sure your W-Router has an SSID unique from your neighbors'. Make sure the W-Router has WEP or other encryption enabled. And your W-router must have DHCP enabled. And it must not be configured to insist on MAC address restriction for all clients. Some W-Routers I've seen do not DHCP exchange correctly with some clients. I Can't say why. |

Stevech:
1. done 2. done 3. DHCP is enabled on the router, but I don't see a specific wireless DHCP setting, but as said earlier I can get my laptop and PSP to connect wirelessly and they are given DHCP addresses. 4. I don't know anything about this setting??!! Kell: I am going to see if I can grab another wireless router and try it out. Thanks Mike |
