Mute does't work for HDTV/DVD

I found out yesterday when answering the phone that the mute doesn't work for HDTV or DVD audio. The volume works fine. So, it's not a huge deal because I can turn the volume all the way down to simulate a mute. Why doesn't a straight mute work, though? It does when playing regular TV.

I have the PureVideo decoders and have set the audio to S/PDIF to receiver. My sound card does decoding on-board and sends it out the analog lines. I can mute the sound fine using the system audio mixer panel.

It looks like a bug to me. I also noticed that Sage takes over control of sound from Windows. Other applications can output sound simultaneously, but not Sage. Other applications can have sound controlled by Windows, but not Sage.

"That's not a bug; it's a feature."

It's actually been like that for quite a while. I've actually always kinda liked it that way because I can check if i'm getting DD sound by just seeing if mute works (my vision is pretty bad so I can't read my reciever's display)
