Cable box IR Port to USB

I've been researching my cable box, a AR2200, which has an IR Port input in the back to control channels. I was wondering if anyone has ever heard of a USB to 1/8" Jack for controlling the channels via IR port instead of using the standard open air IR Transmitter/receiver setup? If so, where can one of these cables be found? I've been looking all over the place.

or would it be better to use a serial cable to IR input on the settop box?

I don't know for sure, but I do know that the stand alone S1 Tivos had what was called an IR port in the back and supplied a serial to ir cable to communicate with it. So that cable does exist, if its the same IR port that Tivo uses.
