4 Channel Recording

I'm looking to set up a news recording system to replace our bank of VCRs.

I need 4 channels. Will this product do the job?

If I have a DV burner, can I burn files to DVD?

Yes.
You'll probably need 4 tuners. (If the 4 channels broadcast news at the same time.) You can get 2 x PVR500 tuner cards from Hauppague.

You would set the news programs as Favorites and have it record them as first runs and reruns to be safe. This way anytime they come on no matter what time they will be recorded.

You can use one of the plugins one of the Sage users made to burn your shows to DVD. You could also use Showanalyzer and Dirmon to mark the commercials. And Videoredo to edit them out.

Download the manual and search the forum to learn more.

Since the heavy lifting of converting the stream to mpeg-2 is done by the tv tuner (assuming pvr-500), the processor requirements are not as important as the disk i/o. Since you haven't mentioned what/who/where you'd be viewing the news streams, the answer is limited. However, a decent graphics card/mpeg-2 decoder with hw acceleration can go a long way in lessoning the burden of decoding the video for viewing.

(fwiw - I run 2 PVR-500 and 2 HD tuners in the same box P4 2.8HT)

EDIT: To answer your question.. If you want industrial, look at running this on server class hardware from IBM/Dell/HP. Get full tower, redundant PS, SCSI disk, make sure you can fit full height cards.

Thanks for the help

Very helpful thank you all. I read somewhere that there is a problem with ATI graphics cards. Any comments?
