Client vs Placeshifter...

I am getting ready to purchase the Sage TV software and am batting around which to get to run on my laptop. The Client or Placeshifter. %90 of the time I will be using the laptop from within my home to watch TV like in the garage and stuff.

The only time I might use place shifter is heading to my parents house, or just going on a trip.

My questions-

-Is video quality the same?
-Does placeshifter run through a router and windows firewall?
-Based on what I would use it for, what would you get?
