If you think you have a bad PVR500...
I've been doing the HTPC thing for a while, so when two of my tuners started displaying poor pictures (snow and distortion, especially on lower numbered channels), I figured one of the cards went bad. I removed them from Sage's tuner line-up and then tried to add them back in. Doing that would lock up Sage. Bad card, yup, gotta be. Hauppauge sent me an RMA, so today I was going to pull the card. See below for the email I just sent:
"I fixed the PVR500. I don't know exactly what I did, but I was trying to figure out what card I needed to pull. I initiated recordings, in SageTV with both my working tuners. I then disconnected one of the RG6 cables coming off the 2 way splitter while I was watching the "good" tuner. I lost the picture on one of the recordings, but not the other. I said "what are the odds that one tuner on each card went bad"?...pretty low. So I disconnected both cables and then re-connected them. I then went into SageTV and added back the two tuners I had previously disabled. This time, instead of locking up SageTV, I got previews on both! I added them back in and started recordings on 4 channels. All 4 channels (2, 3, 4, and 6) were recording and displaying great pictures...no snow, and no distortion. So it must have been something with the sync with the cable signal. Zeroing it out by disconnecting, and then re-connecting fixed it. Go ahead and cancel the RMA, and thanks again for the great customer service.
I don't know exactly why that worked...maybe my cable company changed something and one card handled it on the fly, but the other couldn't. Anyway, something to try if you have a problem with the 500.
