Media extender boot question

Hiya

Im thinking of buying a media extender to get my PC moved out of my lounge. I'm confused by the postings on booting. I figured it used DHCP but is the IP granted by my router (Netgear D834G FYI) or my PC ? Obviously I would expect it to be granted by my router like everything else on the network

Currently, my PC gets a static IP from the router over a wired connection, my plan would be the move this to a wireless connection (still static though) and the MVP would be wired into the router

Also, whats the difference between the Hauppauge MVP (which is orderable here in the UK) and the Sage model ? (Which I'm likely to have to wait longer for and pay customs charges)

Thanks

Tim

Yes, the MVP just sends out a DHCP discover request, so it will get it's IP from any DHCP server on the local subnet (your router here). It's recommended that you setup the router to supply a static IP to the MVP though.

No difference in substance, branding only. Both work the same with the SageTV server.

Thanks, but you don't mean static here do you ? static means the device joins the network with an IP already assigned (which you can't do as there is no input device on the MVP) I think you mean that DHCP is configured to allows grant the same IP to the MAC address of the MVP right ? I need to check if my router can do this...

Cheers

I had my MVP on a dynamically allocated IP. Mind you, it used to crash if left on standby for a longish period of time; perhaps that was related?

Moved to a PC based client now.
