Post Haupauge media MVP

Is there a way to install the sagetv client with placeshifter onto the media MVP so that you can use the mvp over the internet ??

No. The MVP, used as an extender, is not a computer in the sense of installing anything directly _onto_ it. When it boots, it connects via your LAN to the SageTV server and downloads everything it needs at that point.

What about with a VPN setup?

I think you would have a really hard time getting enough bandwidth to stream mpeg2 files over the internet. But if the server could transcode the stream to higher compression, similar to the operation of placeshifter, you might have something then. Interesting thought. I'm just not sure how you would establish the connection to the VPN with the MVP.

theoriticaly, If you had a router-to-router VPN setup or something like ISA server, you could set up the VPN to pass bootp packets. In that case, I think the MVP could possibly get the mvp.bin. But, the bandwidth needs would be high like Mike mentions. You could transcode to reduce bandwith, but would need to recode back to mpeg2 for the MVP. And I don't see how that is possible without some sort of Sage server near the MVP.

Far better idea would be a placeshifter client. It's designed for that application.

The practical answer to this is no.

We can fill in the spaces if/as necessary but it'll still be no. Sorry.

Consider that the MVP will not stream correctly over any HPNA 1.0 device; those are rated at 14mbs theoretical max throughput and operate within your home.

Even if you could get the bandwidth accross the INET cloud you would have problems with the Providor Core and PE routers not preferentially servicing your data flow. So you'd still get stutters and stops.

What if I wanted to set some sort of video conferencing up that traversed multiple networks, but the slowest speed was OC12? That would be plenty of bandwidth for the MPEG.

Sorry, but you would need 1 point 21 jiga watts!!!! And only a bolt of lightning can produce that kind of power.

Did you know that it is actually GIGAwatt but at the time of the movie, they didn't know how to pronounce it correctly? That would be like saying a jiggabyte. Little useless trivia for ya.

How could they not know how to pronounce it? Isn't it a Latin prefix? The movie surely didn't predate Latin! Then again, they did have a flux capacitor!

I don't think they were incapable of figuring it out. It just wasn't a term as widely used as it is today. They probably didn't really care that much because they didn't foresee anyone else really knowing how to pronounce it either.

From wikipedia.org,
Quote:
"Jigowatt"
In the movie, the power required is pronounced "one point twenty-one jigowatts". Although this pronunciation of "gigawatt" was once considered the correct one, it is no longer the most common. (In addition, since Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale were unfamiliar with the term, they misspelled it in the script.) Because of this, a "jigowatt" will sometimes be referred to on Internet forums as a fictional unit or to make fun of someone's electrical knowledge. The spelling "jigowatt" is used in the novelizations of films 2 and 3. However, the book of the original film uses the correct spelling "gigawatt".

Interesting. I was about to point out that the modern language of Rome (Italian - as opposed to Latin, the old language of Rome) would pronounce the term as /jeega/. So, maybe /jeega/ is the correct pronunciation and we've just been pronouncing it wrong all these years referring to Bytes....
