Lightbulb Can we get a thumbnail regenerate setting?

Something somewhere to refresh all thumbnails and rescan for the folder.jpg file and the like?

Just like the refresh media library setting, but for thumbnails.

To have to jump through hoops everytime I rip a new DVD is slightly aggravating.

You're using V6, right? It should fix this stuff when you manually request a library import. If it's not fixing them for you, please submit a bug report with reproduction steps at http://www.sagetv.com/bugs.html

It would also be useful to be able to regenerate the thumbnail for individual videos from a random position in the file. Have quite a few where the thumbnail is from a commercial or similar.

Somthing is wrong here. I am running v6 with SageMC 169. I have been using the IMDB lookup to get thumbnails and have been having all kinds of trouble. I had all my .mpg files directly in the video import directory and the IMDB lookup would not save the .jpg file. I figured out that if I put the .mpg file in a subdirectory of the same name then the .jpg file would save in that directory. I did some tests and got the thumbnails to display. Then I moved a bunch of files, did the IMDB lookup on them all and... no new thumbnails. I did a "Rescan of imported folders" and still nothing. I then switched to the standard Sage UI and still no thumbnails. I second the request for a "regenerate thumbnails" function. I would also like to disable the auto generated thumbnails. That's a real waste of time. Most of the time the generated thumbnail is a black screen or other useless image.

Yeah, that would be great! I often have a black thumbnail or a commercial picture (I start recording always a few minutes earlier to be sure I got it all).

So would we be looking for something like an additional menu item when you click on the file, asking how many seconds from start you want the thumbnail to be 'taken'?

Wouldn't it be simpler to just play the video, seek to the place where you want the thumbnail taken, hit Pause, and then have a right-click menu option to grab that frame?

In fact you can do this now by using a third-party screenshot grabber, resizing the resulting image, and storing it in your SageTV\SageTV\GeneratedThumbnails folder.

Waah, never had a look into that directory (I used to use MC169, put recorded movies in a separate directory and got info + picture via online database search).

It's big (+2000 files), so yes I can just change it in here if needed.

And yes, your approach is much better, just pressing pause and have a snapshot thumbnail taken at that spot. Much easier to use, and maybe also easier to code.

Maybe something for v7 ...

Well, but this won't work with overlay

I tried to implement my own screen grabber by using SageTVTranscoder, but this only worked well for positions at the beginning of the file. The time needed for grabbing a pic was proportional to to the time position itself, I think the ffmpeg has to actually process the file to get to the correct position.

What if your running from MVP, your server is headless...?

Headless servers still manage to take thumbnails somehow. Pausing the playback is just a way of telling Sage when to take the thumbnail, as an alternative to typing in a number. It can still do whatever it normally does to generate a thumbnail from that time code.

If you're referring to the third-party screenshot hack, then I guess you'll have to think up some other hack to use on MVP systems. Play back the file in WMP or something. The point is that the thumbnail folder is accessible and you can drop any image you like in there.

What command are you using to grap the screen shots? This one that I borrowed from Sage seems to be doing it just about instantly...

Code:
SageTVTranscoder.exe -ss 15 -y -i "input.mpg" -f mjpg -vframes 1 -deinterlace -s 256x192 -an "output.jpg"
where -ss is the start seconds

is there a property somewhere to change the "start seconds" from the default of 15? maybe change it to something much greater like a minute so that it doesn't grab a commercial or black frame.

Thanks EP for making me look at this again ! This really works quick, even when grabbing a frame deep in the middle of a recording. When I tried it a few weeks back (with 5.x) I used (I think) the same parameters, but it was basically unusable.

Edit: just found out the difference: I specified the -ss parameter after the input file.

I was.. I guess I was implying that we should be able to manipulate such things with a remote control and not have to run to a keyboard/mouse.

Manually request a library import? I'm not sure what you mean by that. I looked in the manual too.

Do you mean the "Refresh Media Library" in the Setup Menu?

I'm talking about DVD thumbnails.

I also run MC 16x9 and think I had the same problem as you describe as far as not being able to save the coverart from the IMDB lookup.
If that was the case you might check here for a possible solution:
