Placeshifting quality

Is anyone else having a problem with the quality when placeshifting? Mine is not watchable and contains large pixelation.

It was really pretty good in version 5.

I reported one or two problems with latest beta which I'm told have been fixed for the next release. Wait until that appears, give it a shot and file a bug report if it still seems to be worse.

I was amazed that V5 was able to maintain a poor quality but watchable stream at 80kpbs on a very dodgy hotel wlan this week. Nifty bit of software that Placeshifter

Do you know if the issue(s) were in the server, the ps client, or both? In other words, would switching the client back to 11 instead of 12 help until 13 is released?

I am having the same problems. I upgraded to v6 the last time I was in fresno (where my server is ) and I am for doing so. The new placeshifter is totally unwatchable even at 300kbps. I used to be able to wacth with the same bandwith and set up on v5 dunno what v6 did. The only time I get the same quality with v6 is at >1mbps which stuttures and never buffers. I dont have the time to go back to fresno and fix it obviously. I am really bummed at not being able to watch any TV!

I will say that my quality improved with version .13, but it still doesn't seem as good as v5. I will have to test it a little more.

That's weird, I was just thinking that beta .13 placeshifter quality was the best it's ever been. And I've been using placeshifter since it first came out.

Could be that it's just using my 768k home upstream rate better than previous versions. I had upgraded my cable from 384k upload to 768k sometime during Sage 5 time but I didn't see much improvements. Maybe V6 beta .13 is finally using that extra upload for better quality.

Probably is, but the OP is talking about on a LAN, and depending on config, the Placeshifter won't be as good as Client.

Yeah I upgraded my upload speed from 256kb/s to 1Mb/s and didnt see much of a quality improvement. Now I just got a reply in another thread on how to increase the buffer and it increasing rather rapidly now when I hit pause but the quality didnt improve a whole lot.

You must be still playing with v5? Because version 6 beta doesn't have the properties file that was talked about in the placeshifter folder anymore. If you get a chance, try v6 beta .13 and see if you see same the improvements I think I'm seeing.

Btw, I think Stanger has his threads mixed up.

Actually the properties file is there it just has been moved. If using V6 browse to c:/Documents and Settings/username/.sagetv/ and its in there.

So how do you set this buffer because ever since v.11 came out, placeshifter has gone down the tube. I use to be able to watch all my recorded shows here at work on a T3 connection and now every 2-4secs it stutters and pauses...

video_buffer_size=32000000 put that in the placeshifter properties file which is located in the path I listed above. Think that buffers 32MB?? Not good at math.

Thank you very much, that really fixed things up. Now i am back to normal. The programmers need to put this settings in as the default.

I had a few problems with the V6 beta PS but V5 was pretty much faultless. I was in a hotel a couple of weeks ago with a very dodgy/slow WLAN and PS maintained smooth (albeit low quality) video at 80kpbs!
