Playback Sage recorded TV files on an Xbox 360?

I know the answer is no to the question of whether the 360 can be a Sage extender. And I know you have to have MCE to use the Xbox 360 as a media extender at all. My situation is I have Sage running on a MCE version of XP. I DID have to disable certain services for Sage to run properly, but I have no idea if those specific services are required to use the 360 to connect to the MCE to stream videos, etc.

Has anyone tried this? I don't care if I don't get the Sage UI on the xbox 360, I just want to be able to point it at my htpc that's running sage and pull the .mpg files off to watch.

Now I google a little more and I find this which makes it look like MS will now allow videos to be streamed from other PCs that aren't MCE, which would make my first question obsolete. But I can't figure out if that's only for .wmv files, or for .mpg files (like Sage records) as well. So maybe my original quesiton is not obsolete after all...

360 plays Sage MPEGs... mostly

Your milleage may vary but I've done this occasionally and it seems like Media Center Extender on the 360 can mostly playback SageTV MPEGs. The two issues that cropped up frequently (for me) were:
  • Startup latency: It took 2 to 30 seconds to start playback on a physically tethered network.
  • Skip-foward slugishness: There was significant lag between clicks. Sometimes it would just hang the 360.

I tried Vista RC1 and got basically the same results. I haven't tried out the MPEGs produced by SageTV 6 yet.

EDIT:I forgot to actually answer your question. I just created shortcuts to the MPEGs and put the shortcut in "Shared Documents\My Videos"

Oops... just saw this!

Thanks for the reply. That's good to hear that it at least works to some extent. So I assume you're able to do this even with the MCE services disabled (or at least the ones that need to be disabled for Sage to work properly on it)?

Thanks!
