New install questions

I am planning to use placeshifter while I am traveling about in about a month. Got the license and am ready to go in the morning. Here are my stupid questions:

As I read the manual, I should configure my sage server first, correct? I will set up the placeshifter user name and such?

On the laptop I am going to use for the client, do I install SageTV or do I get to my server via Internet Explorer? I haven't really read much about how anyone "gets" to their sage server, just that they may have had some connection issues.

OK, that's all for questions. Any other configuration hints would be appreciated.

Yes, configure your server to enable Placeshifter usage first, including enabling the Placeshifter Server in Detailed Setup -> Advanced, adding a user, and selecting Configure Placeshifter Internet Connection to make sure your server is accessible remotely.

On your laptop, you would install SageTV Placeshifter -- you can download the installer in the same place where you downloaded SageTV.

Doesn't work

Installed the V5.0.2 from my sage server onto the laptop. It basically seemed to install a regular copy of sagetv. It asked for a licence key for not only sage but a media extender too (which I have). I went to placeshifter, that server on the laptop was already on and it has it's own locationID with nowhere to put the one I wrote down from my sagetv server with all the crap on it. Via AOL dialup, the placeshifter client did all of its connections, however, I think it thinks it is acting like my big computer and not a client.

I know I messed up something really, really basic. Could somebody give me a clue. Just pulled hair out and cannot really think straight at this point.

You installed SageTV on your laptop, not SageTV Placeshifter. As I said above: you have to install SageTV Placeshifter, which can be downloaded from the same download page where you downloaded SageTV. That page currently has v5.0.4, so you may want to update your server installation too, or change the link to download the v5.02 PS client. (Or else see v6 in the beta forum.)

Oops

See Andy, I told you it was really, really simple. Will find my old download link for your software and do it correctly this time. I assume an "unistall" of SageTV would be in order on the laptop before I start messing with the new stuff.

Thanks again,

Bob

I would uninstall it; the full copy of SageTV on the laptop isn't going to be doing anything.

Working good

Thanks for the help Andy, got everything tested and working. Of course actually viewing something over a poor dialup connection is a challenge, but my main purpose for now is to actually be able to check and see if a certain television program is scheduled to be recorded or not. The dialup easily takes care of that. While on the road, I can't always be sure of a fast connection so I am not counting on remote viewing, just remote scheduling which seems good now!

Thanks again for the help. Will be ordering another MVP from you guys...the wife is actually upset because ALL the tvs in the house aren't connected to Sage!!!
