upgrading from 2.2.6 (RC) to newest 5.0

Hey all,

I apologize if this has been covered -- I did search the forums first, I swear.

I've been happily using 2.2.6 with an early version of cayars STV for nearly a year and a half now. I feel like maybe I should upgrade to take advantage of the new goodies that 5.0 has to offer, but I have a few questions.

1. I don't use any media extenders or mediaMVP hardware, and I'm not interested in placeshifting, and I don't use Sage for movies or music. Is there any reason to upgrade? Is the actual PVR software better in some way that I will notice? I've been SUPER happy with SageTV for a long time, and if I don't need to upgrade, I don't want to risk the problems that others have had, and I don't want Sage to forget which episodes I've seen, etc.

2. I have read in places that the cayars STV for 2.2.6 won't work in 5.0. Does this mean I can't just install 5.0 over the top of my 2.2.6? In the FAQ, it says this will work "99% of the time," but I have a feeling I'll be in that 1%. Are there any other "gotchas" when making a jump this big? Would it be better to just install fresh?

Thanks so much for any advice.

If it's not broke, don't fix it.
Seriously though, I don't think any changes have been made for the PVR portion between 2 & 5 but I could be wrong. Take a look at what was updated and make your decision based on that.

Thanks, teknubic.

That link took me to the beta release thread, which has links to the release notes of every single version. That's super useful, actually, and I'm glad to know that it is there. Do you know of any place that has a reader's digest version, though? I guess a lot of the newer releases have been focused on new features and add-ins (like placeshifting, etc.). I'm trying to find information just on the core PVR app.

If that information doesn't exist anywhere, no worries. I figured I'd ask. Thanks again for your help.

I think what you might be looking for is the marketing-speak. If you go to the SageTV Homepage, you can see all the major features of the current release. It's not detailed at all but it's not supposed to be. Now, if you use the Wayback machine, you can see what the marketers were touting as the major features of that release.
Just poking around a bit myself, it appears that SageTV really ramped up around summer of '05.
HTH
