Video Card & Playback Quality
How much does the quality of your video card effect the playback quality? I have an old TNT2 card in my box and it looks decent but not as good as my little 19" TV. Would a newer card help? I am playing this back on my 19" LCD in window mode. Any card suggestions would be nice if possible. I am only using this box for the SageTV stuff.
Thanks, Eric |

I am not even sure on what a TNT2 video card is.
The quality you see is greatly affected by the video decoders used such as Nvidia Purevideo, Windvd etc. Most of these utilise specific hardware functionality on the driver/video card pair to produce a specific result. The latest decoders are very good, but they require the later video cards. I would have to say that switching your card to a low cost Nvidia 6200 or 7300 Series card or to an ATI 1300 card would produce better quality especially if paired with the Nvidia Purevideo Decoder.

Thanks. I had a feeling. This is the first time in a while I've ventured out of the server workd and played with the eye candy of newer video cards and such Once I get this setup, I'll probably build a much quieter box that I can have in my main TV room
Also, are there any letters after 5200 - 7300 I should avoid? I recall back a few years ago that LX, XL, or something like that denoted an inferior card. Eric Last edited by seaeric; 11-17-2006 at 09:55 AM. |

It depends on what sort of content you want to play. I think the "LE" letters should be avoided but I may be wrong.
