HD over component video

I have a question regarding HD signals. Can you receive HD over component video?

Not to sound like a jerk, but it depends on what you mean. Component cables are often used to carry HD from a source to a monitor, and I'm using my 7600GS's component out to display my HTPC on my TV at 1080i.

However, if you mean 'receive' in the sense of brining HD source into your computer (such as an HD cable box) In that case, the answer is no. You have to bring it in via an HDTV card with a built in receiver, or use a digital input such as firewire or USB. Both digital input options require a fair amount of work to get going.

Since we're being super-precise and jerky, there are capture options for bringing HD in over component, but it takes professional-grade hardware to compress it in real time. That's why all the working capture options take DTV streams that are already compressed.

Well, theres this card: http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/intensity/ . That captures raw HDMI. Problem is most (at least mine does) cable boxes have HDCP turned on, and that card doesnt bypass it. You could get a converter to go from component to HDMI, but those run at least $150. And you cant get 5.1 sound that way.

If your willing to do that, you have to get past the fact that an uncompressed video stream is coming into your pc. That stream will be roughly 10 GB a MINUTE for 1080i video. The card supposedly can do some downconverting, and has some efficient software encoders... but they might only work with a mac.

Before this card, anything like this cost $thousands.

If you want to be a guinea pig and try this out... I'll appreciate it

Oh, uh, yeah. Supposedly one gets a better picture quality with a digital cable (HDMI/DVI), but I cannot tell the difference.
