Searching on the id3 tag comments field

I have a ton of mix cds and and compliation albums. The artist for these are either the DJ of the mix cd or "Various Artists". The featured artists on the individual tracks are listed in the comments field of the id3 tag. If I do a search for an artist will the comments field of the id3 tags be queried as well?

What version are you using? v6 reads the artist, album artist, and composer fields, so more than a single artist can be associated with one song and the artist can be different from the album artist now.

Im using 6.0.15... If I put the featured artists in the album artist field will that show up in the list by artists section as well as the main artist and are those fields searchable? I am trying to prevent ie: Janet Jackson ft. Khia showing up as an artist. I would prefer Janet Jackson to show up as one artist for the song and Khia to show up as another for the song. Also I have tracks with as many as 5 artists on it....

It can be VERY tedious, but I'd recommend using any of a number of MP3 tag editors to update the files to contain proper data. I regularly use "MP3 Tag Tools" but there are many others. This and others can be found at:

The nice thing about these is that they are "portable" applications that don't need "installation" and can be run from a USB thumb drive.

I don't think you want to list a different album artist for each song, or else you will end up with many single-song albums.

You can list multiple artists and/or composers for each song & SageTV will parse the list for each separate name -- I think you separate them with semicolons, slashes, or whatever ID3 uses to separate multiple names in a single field.

In SageTV, you can then choose whether to include any or all of the artist, album artist, & composer fields in the Artists view for the music browser. Each name is then listed separately, so a single song might be listed many times if a lot of people contributed to it.

Thanks Opus, the "/" delimiter seems to be working great.... Does anyone know if this will have an adverse affect on any apps that use ID3 tags?

If a file has an ID3 v1.1 and a ID3 v2.x tag... which tag does sage use? Or will it use both....
