Studio without SageTV/Client

Is there a way to run Studio without client or SageTV loaded on the box? I have a media server running SageTV, but my primary box for development (and viewing) only uses PlaceShifter.

Is there a way to install Studio without the primary software? I haven't even cracked open Studio yet, but was curious about what would need to be done before I went down this road.

Thanks,
Stu

I think the server piece is necessary for Studio. So couldn't you just install the server part on your dev box also? Depending on your development goals, you wouldn't necessarily be using it to record or bring in EPG data. You might need to install a personal firewall like ZoneAlarm so that it it can't phone home or isn't seen on your LAN.

My point is not to cheat SageTV out of licensing, but to just make it more convenient with the understanding that the secondary server install would never be used for viewing--only dev work.

No, Studio is an integral part of SageTV; it is not a separate application.

You can open Studio from a Placeshifter client, but it wil open on the server, since extenders (PS and MVP clients) are really running as part of the server application. You can run PS on the server & studio will then open on the same PC.

I had actually considered doing this (especially since I don't have a tuner card in my dev box), but wasn't sure what the licensing implications were. I've been thinking about downloading Client anyway (just to see what the differences between PS and Client are), so I may use this as an excuse (and save my PS license for my laptop).

Thanks for both replies!

Even if it were possible, running Studio without a Sage UI (server or client) wouldn't be very useful. You really need to be able to test-drive your code in the UI pretty frequently to make much progress in Studio.

It's also a smart idea to do your Studio development on a client box rather than on your production server. So I consider a SageTVClient license an essential part of any serious Studio dev setup.

As a developer there should be a license that will allow development and not require the user to pay for an extra license. I for one use my laptop for all my development. I won't use sagetv on my laptop, even though I can, I only need it for development, especially when I'm not at home.

I guess this is a request, a development platform that does not require a license for the client/server... maybe limit the features so the user can only playback 10 second clips etc...
