Playback of DVD's

I'm sure that I'm missing something in my HTPC setup, but I can't get my DVD's that I've loaded to my hard drive to play. I used 1ClickDVD to copy them to my drive and used some compression of the video to save space, but I get the following error when I try to play any DVD on my system. "There was an error playing "dvd title": Error (-19): There is no media player that can play back the selected file.

I copied the entire dvd structure, so what gives?

It's the compression. What format is it compressed in? For DVDs the vob file is really an mpeg file and that's what most players expect it to be.

DVD Structure, I believe

Video_TS, VOB, IFO and BUP file extensions.

Is there a codec needed on the server in order for the clients to play the movie? I have MVP extenders, not PC's, but I did try using my laptop as a client and it still did not work.

The MVP extenders have a hardware mepg2 decoder on them. That's why I said if you did any sort of compression (as opposed to shrinking it via getting just the main move, dropping extras, 2nd language sound tracks, etc.) then that would be your issue. Also 1ClickDVD does not do encrypted, commercial DVDs. It will handle your personal DVDs that aren't encrypted. Are you using 1ClickDVD Copy, Copy Pro or Movie? Movie converts to a different format. I'm guessing yours may be commercial DVDs. Thus the message no media player that can play them back.

Other DVD play problem

I also have copied DVD's to my hard drive but cannot play them with Sage. I can play them fine with Windows Media Player or Nero. When I try to play the files with Sage Media Center by browsing to a selected file, the screen "blinks" and and returns me to the Media Center menu. If I browse to an actual DVD and try to play a file on it, the same thing happens. Lastly, if I try to play a DVD using Play DVD in the Sage Media Center, the DVD begins t play for a second then freezes.

Anybody have any ideas?

FYI: I'm using version 6, and tried reinstalling bit it didn't help.

Have you selected DVD-capable video & audio decoders in Setup -> Detailed Setup -> DVD?

GTwannabe: please read the PMs I have sent you in the past.

Will DVDs play directly from the drive?

Will the DVDs play on the server?

Will they play in Windows Media Player?

As long as I'm not using Sage, everything works fine. I can play DVD's using WMP or Nero. I can play files from the hard drive using either of those programs, too.

Weird, hu?

And I never get an error message using Sage, it just doesn't play files on a DVD or copied from a DVD onto the hard drive.

What are the settings in the Detailed Setup -> DVD section?

You could enable debug logging to see if it logs an error.

Are you, by any chance, using Overlay mode & running on a secondary monitor? I ran across a decoder or two that could not play DVDs in overlay on a secondary monitor, but everything else played fine.
