What does this connection do?

So I'm just starting to browse around the HDTV arena to see what's there, and learn alittle about them. This TV has a serial port, and I'm not sure why.

Here is a pic of the (front?) of the unit.

What do you do with a serial port? There is also a traditional VGA connection for a PC on the back of the unit.

Perhaps it has an obvious use, but I'm not sure what it is.

Thanks
Matt

A lot of high-end AV components have serial input for remote control from programmable AV controllers. It's a more reliable alternative to IR emitters for integration of these components into centrally-controlled home theater setups. I'm not familiar with that specific model of TV, but most likely that's what it's for. Not sure why the serial port would be on the front panel, though.

Some TVs have a USB port for updating the firmware. Maybe this is the purpose of the serial port on the TV you describe. Using a serial connection for this sounds a little outdated, though.
