What decoder are you using? At one time, you were using the PowerDVD decoder and could change the caption option.
It sounds like you are using the Sage decoder now, or some other non-DVD non-CSS decoder. Switch it to a DVD decoder and you should be able to change the caption option. You're real close, just need to get the decoder set right.

still no
I know I am close but it still is not happening....
I am using the nvidia decoder. I have now noticed that every single show has a CC symbol with a red line through it. This happens even though I know that a) CC is transmitted on every channel we have (been using CC for years) b) CC has been recorded becuase I could strip it out with the program yuo gave me So why is the crossed out CC symbol showing up and why can't I get CC? |

I think the crossed out CC symbol is JREkiwi's closed caption import letting you know that you don't have an .smi CC file.
looking back at your previous post I see this. Quote:
Anyways, if you are still having the Captions (off) that you can't turn on to CC1, I'd say to double check your decoder. Make sure it is set in detailed setup>Video>MPEG2 video decoder filter to "Nvidia Video Decoder" or "default" if it was the last decoder installed, and you confirmed that the nvidia decoder was the default with microsoft's DECCHECK. edit: is this the icon you see, in the attachment?

more progress
yes that is the icon.
yes. it was "captions(off)". sorry I got it working (YAY! ) BUUUUUUUUTTTT It was not the video decoder, but instead, the renderer was set to default. When I set this to VMR9, i get captions. but my video is jumpy now. Please tell me something else is not right and I dont have to choose between jumpy video and CC. There are also faint diagonal lines across the whole screen. |

I never messed with the default renderer, which if I recall is VMR7, or something like that. I just tried it and didn't get any CC, but I didn't mess with all the settings.
You can use Overlay as the renderer and many people say that overlay can be smoother than VMR9. With overlay, you will have to disable "overlay color keying". As for jumpyness, VMR9 does need a good video card and decoder.

Video/Audio -> Video Renderer -> Overlay Advanced -> Overlay Color Keying -> Disable Like what ke6guj said that to use VMR9 you need a fairly high end cpu/videocard. Bill Last edited by TechBill; 09-29-2007 at 12:07 AM. |

high end
so im still pretty happy that CC is appearing... but i still need some more help.
first, i would like to user overlay, but when i select that and watch something, I hear the audio just fine, but the menus kind of remain until I hit OK to make them go away. Then I am left with a big black rectangle (more like tow recatbles 90 degree rotated from each other, on top of each other) where the menues were. Thoughts on how to make that stop? second, what is "fairly high end"? I have a 2GHz athlon 640 (? I cant remember the exact model). I have an n-force based motherboard and an nvidia geforce fx5500. Is that high enough? |

I agrees with ke6guj that fx5500 is probably is why CC rendering is not smooth for you in VMR9.
I am using GT6600 and it runs good with VMR9 overlay but I can notice that I am on the borderline with this card on a 2.4G Intel Prescott w/ 1 Gig of ram running in overlay. I can see some small tiny sluggish or rare choppy video but it something I can tolerate easy and does not occurs too often. This fall I am going to put together a nicer system for SageTV because I am so in love with the way SageTV renders the CC on video that I am going make sure I get a nice right nvidia card that does VMR9 excellent for the new system.
