Adding GUI Sound Effects?

Just curious if there is a way to add events that would play a sound when menu items are activated, selected, etc. This is a feature that Beyond TV has and it really enhances the user experience IMO.

Interesting how people's perceptions differ!!!

My wife and I personally hate the sound effects on DVR's (TiVo & MOXI to name a couple.) We find them cool for the first day or so, then it's time to turn them off.

That biased opinion said, I see no reason why something couldn't be incorporated into the STV to play sounds.

Just curious (and this isn't meant to be critical at all!) but why do you like the sounds?

I have no idea. Just the opposite of you and your wife, I hated the sounds at first but then they grew on me. My girlfriend thinks they're cute and the first question from her when I decided to buy Sage and not BTV was, "why are there no sound effects?"

Try using SageMC. Go into settings and then SageMC and you can enable the sound effects. Thi is NOT available in the stock STV. Another good reason for using SageMC.

Then by all means, someone, SOMEONE, please get this guy sound effects pronto!!! GFAF* is in serious jeopardy!!!

Seriously, though, the cool draw to SageTV is its customizability. I'm interested to see what people come up with....

(*WAF=Wife Acceptance Factor, so it would follow that GFAF means Firl Friend Acceptance factor)

There's a PlaySound method in the Utility API, so it's possible to add sounds to any STV using Studio. The flaw in this method (even in SageMC) is that it plays the sounds on the machine where the STV code executes. For Placeshifter or Extender clients, that means the sounds play on the server.

Wow.

When I was evaluating the various DVR packages one of the major reasons I had against SageTV was its awful (IMHO) user interface. In the 10 minutes I've used it so far, SageMC fixes most of my gripes with the standard interface!

I really hate using a Tivo. Of coarse I used Sage first (default STV), and the Tivo "bloop" is about the worst thing ever. (ok, vast overstatement)

Aye. I wrote sage off for years based mostly (I must admit) on the look of the stock ui. I think sage should find some excuse to get sagemc screenshots onto the main page. Maybe an article on how cool the user community is.

I just downloaded SageMC 16x9... maybe I shoudn't have because I don't see any way to TURN OFF the sounds. Is the 16x9 version behind regular old SageMC? Or am I missing something(probably). There is no SageMC menu item under settings for me.

Did you download v6.3.2? The version number should be visible in the info pane under the setup menu. In the SageMC Options menu (under setup), there is a setting to disable sounds.

Aloha,
Mike

If you never had it you need the full install:

Full Install 6.3.2

Then go to My Menu-Settings-SageMC-Main. Go to the buttons on the right and page down 4 times to the "Play Sounds" button and make sure it is enabled.

Careful Mightyt. Mixing a Wife and a Firl Friend can have some fairly extreeme and undocumented random reactions from both involved parties.

If you are going to try make sure to keep both seperated and ignorant of the other

I have the latest SageMC and sounds enabled but they have never worked, looking in the folders I have around 5 wav files. Is there anything else that needs to be set.

Thanks

Yeah, it was not there. I don't know what version I had because I reverted back to the stock interface. Which ever version... I had downloaded it from here somewhere but there must be multiple versions out on these forums.

Fortunately I had backed up my entire SageTV directory under program files before making the change to MC16X9. I ended up having a lot of trouble with whatever version of MC i had... really didn't work well at all. Navigation went to wrong panes... some navigation didn't work correctly... and sorry I can't put a finger on it but it just wasn't *right*. When I went to revert back to the stock interface and restarted Sage then Sage completely stopped working. I overwrote the sagetv program file directory with my backup and all was good again after that with stock interface.

Maybe I'll try again with the direct link this weekend. Thanks.

The only practical use I can think of for sound effects is to confirm that it received the remote commands. Sometime when I'm pressing a button on the remote, I'm not sure if it's slowly loading or the command wasn't received. The spinning logo doesn't come on all the time. Like going into the SageTV Recordings menu, sometime the command wasn't received and I have to press the button again. And then there are times when it is just slowly loading.

I would prefer a visual confirmation rather than a sound effect though, like a small red or green circular blink somewhere on the corner of the menu. Much like the light on the MVP, but this is directly on the menu where you can see it rather than looking off screen at the MVP box.

I don't have sage v6 so am limited to v6.12a of sageMC.

I also don't like the sounds and was thinking of just replacing them with short wav files of silence. Is there another way to actually disable them?
