Recommended Authoring and Compression Freeware?

Just looking for the basic stuff. What free software will allow me to compress my MPEG recordings into much smaller file sizes? And also, what can I use to publish them to DVD?

Thank you very much!

If you are using SageTV version 6 it already has the capability to re compress shows into mpeg4. There is a mod out there by EvilPenguin to automatically burn shows to DVD http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21418 I have not used it but have heard good things about it.
Outside of Sage I use Divx encoder to compress my movies, its not free though.

I'm unable to use version six, unfortunately, as it seems to have problems with my sound card.

I've got a show I mean to transfer to a family member, but the file's too large for my 512 MB pen drive.

You should still be able to use my plug-in manually. When you download it, run perl2dvdsetup.exe as a transcoding PC, and then instead of importing it into Sage, just drag and drop the video on top of the "single_videoDVD_dragNdrop.bat" and that should create an image file right next your original recording that you can burn using any burnings software.

Oh, you'll probably also want to set
Code:
DVD: Number of screenshots to take for submenus =0
manually in the perl2dvd.advanced.pref file.

Thank you, evilpenguin! That should come in handy for burning shows to DVD.

However, I'd still like to find something to shrink the recordings I already have for play on my computer. I tend to record at the 2 GB per hour quality setting, but I'd like to quarter the file size. Are there any freeware options, or is it necessary to buy an encoder for transfering into DivX, or something?
