Problem with aspect ratio mode

I've seen others with a similar looking problem in previous threads, but didn't get a definitive answer from them, so I'll give it a shot here again...

I just got a new LCD HDTV. The Sagetv interface fills the screen completely but I can't set the aspect ratio mode to get recorded programming or DVDs to fill the screen, or even stretch it horizontally in the aspect ratio settings. When I switch to 16x9 mode the video actually narrows a bit and I can see the already present black pillars on the side turn a slightly lighter shade of black. Imported videos like Xvid or Divx encoded avi's have no problem with this. I have the Windows desktop resolution set to the TV's native 1360x768 and connected via VGA. I've set the Overscan boundaries properly and set the display aspect ratio to 16x9. I've tried switching to different video renderers and decoder filters to no avail. Here's some useful technical information:

Hauppauge 150
Win 2000 Pro
Video renderer:VMR9
Video decoder:Nvidia PureVideo

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

What video card are you using, and how is it attached to the TV? (VGA, Component, HDMI?)

Does the Windows desktop fill the screen appropriately?

Using ATI Radeon 7000, and as I said before, connected via VGA and desktop fills the screen

Have you adjusted the aspect ratio settings under the detailed settings section in sage? You should be able to adjust the video size to what you want there for each aspect ratio (source, fill, 4x3, and 16x9) independantly.

Aloha,
Mike

Do you mean just toggling each mode under 'Aspect RAtio Mode'? If so, then yes this is what I've been trying and not having any success with. Or do you mean there is a way to manually customize each mode?

The horizontal and vertical size can be individually customized for each mode.

Do you mean the zoom setting is saved independently for each ratio mode?
so i can leave 4x3 at 100%H and 100%V but then alter the 16x9 setting to the proper horizontal zoom?

Yes.

You can also get some very good info by reading stanger89's "Aspect Ratio 101," which is linked in his sig.

I see he says:
16x9 - Stretches all media to fill a 16:9 display area (dito).
Fill - Stretches all media to fill your display or the Sage window

This does not happen for me.
I am running an nvidia 5200 via VGA into my 1360x768 lcd and when I hit fill or 16x9 it does not change my 4x3 recorded content.
I thought it should.

EDIT: for some 4x3 content it works when i set 16x9 or fill, but for other 4x3 content it does nothing. DVD's seem OK.
