FSE prevents context switching between 2D (XP desktop) and 3D (SageTV) modes. This can be a slow and expensive process (ever Alt-Tab or have Windows throw an error box while you're playing a game?). That context switching can cause stuttering and other glitches in video playback.

With Vista's Aero desktop engine, there is no 2D mode. Everything on screen is a 3D surface. You don't need FSE because everything on screen is inherently exclusive with 3D mode.

Hi GT,

Thanks for the info. It looks as if vista may be the way to go on my next client.

Well, here's a real downside to running Vista so far:

I have Vista output to a TV in one room (with a receiver with digital audio) and another in a 2nd room . Since most TV's don't have a digital audio INPUT, I have to use the 1/8 inch stereo plug from the Sage PC as the stereo input for the TV.

In XP, with the same hardware, I could simultaneously output Dolby Digital / DTS AND stereo from my Realtek AC'97 sound card.
In Vista you have to pick a default playback device. If I select the digital output then the analog stereo is muted. If I select analog then the digital is muted (until I tried an older driver which allowed the hardware to send a stereo signal over S/PDIF. At any rate, I've lost the ability to hear Dolby Digital / DTS / Windows media and all movies are in stereo (with both TV's enabled).

This sucks! There is much more to this; please see this thread...

I figured out how to stop ehtray from loading in home premium!!!!
this was totally accident. I've been searching for a way to do this for 2 days now. I was poking around Vista as I am new to it and.....
control panel-> performance information and tools
on the left hand side there is a place for "manage startup programs"

you can enable and disable things there!

edit: never mind somehow windows keeps adding a new startup entry for ehtray

For UAC issues, you might want to look into TweakUAC (www.TweakUAC.com) and put the UAC into Quiet mode instead of turning it off.
