My guess is I'll have to switch the NHL monitor to the latest ESPN scoreboard format, so an upgrade will probably be necessary. I've got v2.2.0 ready to go with the GWT upgrades, log4j logging, etc. so I'll test the NHL parser before Wed and get v2.2.0 up in time for opening night.

Looks like the parser does not need to be updated for the NHL. It seems v2.1.4 is good to go for the NHL.

SRE seemed to work tonight as it successfully extended my recording of the Leafs-Habs game.

My daily automated tests showed success for the old NHL parser (which surprised me), but always good to hear an actual live test working successfully. Now I feel good for when the real NHL season starts on Saturday night - with the start of the Oilers' season!

I'm also a hockey fan and can say this worked for me last night. (Go Islanders!)

hi slugger,

first of all, thanks for truly great plugin...........with BTV it was always a real p.i.a. to have to manually extend each baseball game and hope the padded time was sufficient.................SRE is magical

just wanted to check if there are any issues with the baseball playoffs, or should the current version be ok

thx

MLB should be fine through to the end of the season. ESPN typically doesn't change its data formats during a season. But should that change, my daily automated tests will catch it and I can usually respond with an update rather quickly (as long as I'm around to see the test results).

However, the one "gotcha" with playoffs is that the EPG data isn't always updated properly. Typically, a playoff game (in any sport) will have have EPG data of:

Title: MLB Baseball
Episode: ALDS: Teams TBA

If the EPG doesn't list who's actually playing then you must create an override in SRE and tell it who's playing otherwise it will not be able to monitor the game. As long as you keep an eye on that then you should be fine. When you create an override SRE will immediately go to ESPN and find the game and report an error if there's a problem.

Snapshot 600 is now available on Google Code. Along with the GWT upgrades (for native IE8 support), build 600 also contains integrated support for the new SageAlert API. This is currently experimental and is likely to change before v2.2.0 is released, but in this build SRE will fire a RemoteEvent to SageAlert when any of the following significant SRE events occur:
  • SRE begins monitoring a recording successfully
  • SRE is unable to find a valid data source for an event it expects to be able to monitor
When either event occurs, SRE will fire an event with SageAlert and all registered listeners will be notified. This allows you to receive an email, SMS alert, etc. when a significant event occurs in SRE.

This feature is turned off by default and requires SageAlert v0.0.3.598 or newer to be installed and running.

Slugger - should the SRE logs be purged occaionally? Mine seem to be getting pretty big and it takes TONS of scrolling to get down to the current date.

The logs do purge/rotate at 512KB, but you can change that in the sre.log4j.properties file (changes to this file require a restart of the SRE app to take effect) in your sagetv root install dir. I am looking at a way to dump the logs in reverse order within the GUI in a future release.

If the teams are listed as TBA in the Guide, then you can create an override in the SRE web application to allow SRE to monitor the game. In the SRE web application, navigate to the "Overrides" tab. Double click on the world series game and select "Create Override". In the dialog box, enter "Philadelphia Phillies at New York Yankees" and save.

That should be all you need to do to allow SRE to monitor the game.

do you replace the entire subtitle field with "Philadelphia Phillies at New York Yankees" or just replace the 'teams tba' part?

Technically, for the pro sports (MLB, NFL, NHL, NBA), it wouldn't matter, however, the recommended way is to replace the entire subtitle field. Either way, when you change the field's value, SRE immediately goes out to the web and looks for the game data, if the info you've entered is invalid SRE will tell you right away and refuse to create the override.

Guys,
I've still not tried this plugin which sound simply brilliant (as the Guinness guys would say) but I keep hearing really good things about it. As a sports fan it's on my to-do list and I want to blog about it on GeekTonic.

In the meantime if anyone is interested in writing up a little guest-post for GeekTonic about SRE, how it works and how it makes your life better I would welcome it as I'm back-logged on my writing at the moment. Any takers can just send me a DM.

Thanks!

so cool that it extended the world series game to compensate for a really long
rain delay

NCAA Basketball Monitors Broken

The NCAA basketball monitors (Men and Women) are broken in all versions of SRE up to and including 2.2.0.628 due to a page format change by ESPN.com. The break causes an ArrayIndexOutOfBounds exception in the code and will probably crash SRE if it tries to monitor a game. A fix will be available ASAP, but, unfortunately, it won't be tonight as I just don't have time tonight. If you're recording NCAA basketball, you may want to disable SRE until a fix is available (though if it does crash it WILL NOT crash Sage, just SRE, which won't hurt anything (other than recordings won't be extended).
