Client Licensing?

I have one client license that I have installed on one partition of a computer. I an building another partition that is stripped down version without a lot of extra crap on it.

When I try to connect to the server it says I need another license because i am running it on another machine - but I am using the same hardware / IP etc, just another partition on the same machine.

Shouldn't that be legal to do? Is there a problem with the check? I can understand if were on a different piece of iron, but not to what is essentially a backup partition on the same drive.
