I checked bandwidth usage on the last 720p recording. Task manager reported 12% for just the 1 stream. looks like from that any more than 2 might be pushing it on 10/100. not that I need more than 2 at my place. SD MVP will get sidelined to the bedroom when the HD comes out.

flavius -

still holding out for Q2 release eh? hehe

I too am still holding out for the HD Extender. I just ordered my HDHomeRun (to arrive on Friday). Transcoding to High Quality is great, but I would rather have full HD quality and not have to run my server at full speed all the time (okay really it is only 1 core and only about 70%, but you know what I mean).

paul-

wait a sec... your's is running at 2.4ghz per core and only using 1 core you can transcode to High quality?? dang I'm jealous. my AMD 3200+ runs at 2.4 and the best I can do w/o stuttering is Standard. I've contemplated overclocking it a bit as a stop-gap, but if it locks while I'm out of town the wife will not be happy. 480p looks good, but nowhere near 720p/1080i.

My Asus mobo allows for *automated* oc'ing (up to 20%) - the cpu is still < 2.2Ghz when transcoding HD just fine.

It's a different architecture. If yours is locking while oc'ing - do you have a heat problem?

I haven't been brave enough to try to OC yet. Probably won't have a heat problem; got a Zalman Cu/Al fan that keeps things under 55C during comskip runs. I may try it this weekend when there's little chance of missing Faves.

Well actually, if I am not mistaken and based on what I have seen on my server this is true, the transcoder is single threaded, so it can only utilize 1 core (1 core averaging 70-80% and the other core only about 10-15% due to running Sage and windows) and trust me I hear you on the lock ups. It's one thing for the server to lock up when I am home and I am the one to run to the basement to hit reset, its a whole other thing if she has to (not that I get a lot of lock ups, but every so often). Heck I will even go so far, as we get mroe lock ups from the MVP's (which makes sense) then we do our server and even just getting up and walking across the room to unplug it and plug it back in can annoy her. Man, my wife is very demanding isn't she?!?!?!

Thumbs up

this morning I watched Boston Legal in HD through my Media MVP. I'm not sure I've ever been able to transcode before.

My server is an xp2600 with 1gig ram.

I didn't seen any stutters at all. The only 'problem' I had was the fastforward didn't work. I had to use the quick skip to skip the commercials.
Not a big deal at all.

Of course, my server was pegged at 100% and I had no other recordings going on and no other tvs in use at the time.

But still - very happy.

The smooth ff/rw didn't work for me either, i just reasigned the buttons for 2 levels of jump forward/reverse.

I have amd64 dual 2.6ghz w2gb i was using as server and client for main tv. I have a PC client, and I just got 2 MediaMVP's. I was amazed at the quality of the HD playback in SD, but it didnt take long to notice my server is using 40-50% cpu while streaming one HD content to a MVP.. I'm going to need a seperate server for all this

Edit: I just tested both MVP's playing HD content and timeshifting, my CPU for both processor is 90-100%, but even when at 100% the playback is smooth on the mvp's. Can't wait for HD Media Extenders so they dont work my server up transcoding everything.
