How do I make my gamepad work with MAME in SageTV

I have a Gravis Gamepad Pro. I am trying to get it to work with MAME inside SageTV. The keyboard works great for controlling the games. How do I switch the games over to be controlled by the gamepad? Where are these settings? Thanks in advance

I use Girder to use my gamepad to navigate Sage. I just map the buttons to keystrokes that sage uses. Takes about 15 min.

I found it easiest to use one of the "smartjoy" PSX adapters. Turns a playstation (I/II) controller into usb. worked great for all sorts of emulators including mame and you have the added bonus of a well designed button layout including working analog sticks.

They even work with ddr pads if you are into that sort of thing.

I have one of the single controller and dual controller adapters both retail @12-15 dollars. Works great.
