Bigtime memory usage

How much memory usage are you guys seeing? I was having some issues with freezes/etc. It may have been coincidental but prior to the freeze, memory seemed to be maxed so I, increased the allowable heap size to 533MB (should have been 512 but who knows), in the hopes that my particular configuration for some reason needed just a bit more memory. Anyway the JVM Heap Size is currently 320MB/533MB/533MB after about a day and half of usage. As of now, it doesnt appear that equilibrium has been reached, and this memory wont be freed up.

So, is this a resource freeing issue within Sage or is the Java setup (1.6.0_02) somehow messed up? Anyone having similar memory concerns?

Thanks,
DQ

If you press the delete key/remote command a few times in the system info screen, does the memory usage drop considerably?

If so, then all is normal -- Java's memory management only triggers a big memory cleanup when it reaches the max heap size (the 'delete' command is a manual trigger for this).

Memory dropped, but not much

Well, I mashed the DEL key several times and saw a drop from 376MB used to 351MB used. So a significant drop in memory but still using too much.

Any other ideas? Roll back Java to 1.5?

Do you have a very large number of imported music, video, and/or picture files?

Also, is this in the server (without service mode)

(Andy: on my 6.1 system, I have 7000 pics, 4000 music files, 500 videos and 60 DVDs in my lib, and my service is only using 55Mb after garbage collect... Imported media does not use that much mem)...

I was basing that question on other people's comments that they had to increase the max heap size when they had a huge music library -- in the range of 50,000 - 60,000 songs one time.

Additional info...

- No service mode
- ~2200 Audio files
- ~3000 photos
- ~150 DVDs
- ~600 recordings

In the grand scheme of things, closer to Nielm's setup than (55MB) than the mondo 60,000 file setups (that may have needed more heap allocated).

Any other thoughts? Transport streams (.ts) causing issues?
