Changing drive letters

Is it possible to change drive letters for partitions on which I record shows? I have two drive letters that I need to change that contain recordings and do not want to lose access to them in Sage.

Thanks!

Usually the most problem-free way to go is to use UNC paths. I'm not sure what will happen when you go from a drive letter to a UNC path, though I'm sure Andy or someone else will be along shortly to clear that up. Once you have sage using a UNC path successfullly though, just move the folder to the new drive and re-share it so it has the same UNC path as before.

There is a long FAQ for this sort of thing. (It looks more difficult than it is; that FAQ covers a lot of possibilities.) The short version is: backup wiz.bin before making changes & make sure the old recording dir path is visible to SageTV after making the change, even if you have to map a blank folder to the old drive letter.

I would like to do this, but when I set up the Recording Directory paths as \\computername\directory, the Disk Space part of Nielm's Dynamic Menus stops showing accurate readouts. Did I make some kind of mistake in setting up the paths?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but this is my experience (the FAQs on this are very unclear)

Sage will, AT STARTUP (of service or app), looks for recorded show ID numbers that it has stored in the database wiz.bin. It will accept that ID no matter what recording directory it is in NOW, even if that differs from where it used to be. But the original directory, though perhaps empty, must exist the first time Sage discovers the new location of the recording. Thereafter, the old directory need not exist.

Example:
a recording "greatest show on earth ID 1234.mpg" was stored in F:\recordings when it was recorded. If you move it to G:\moreRecordings, sage will find and use it. I have been told that an F:\recordings directory must exist when Sage finds the moved file, but the file need not still be in F:\recordings. indeed, F:\recordings can be an empty NTFS directory.

I hope this is correct.
(PS: there is some tool in Sage 6.2 to cope with a problem in the way some recordings' names or IDs are handled; I don't understand what has been written about this in the FAQs).
PPS: There may be issues with Sage and UNC and/or mount point file systems in terms of computing free/used disk space. Not sure.

I am in the process of combining al my legacy recordings among three drives into one directory on a RAID1 drive pair and am using the above strategy.

Mine's always worked fine that way. Did you remember to make the share writable by network users?

Just in case this is relevant: don't forget that if you are using service mode, the service must be configured to log in as a user w/a password who has read/write permission for the UNC path. And, you'll have to reconfigure the service's user setting after installing a SageTV upgrade.

Yes, and it still is not working.

Just to be clear, if my computer's name is "sage" and my directories are d:\shows and g:\shows2, wouldn't the UNC paths be \\sage\shows and \\sage\shows2 ?

That should be correct, unless you manually shared the folder under a different name.

I'm not running the service, and the UNC paths were correct in Sage, and the Disk Space was still not displaying properly. That is to say, it gave me numbers for free space, but when I looked in the Disk Space options, it said that I had 100% free disk space, making me believe that it is not reading the directories properly. Frustrating. I guess I'll just have to change the drive letters and set up a mapped drive to a dummy folder. The whole point of this was to facilitate commercial skipping on two Clients installed in other computers in the household, which in itself is confusing enough to set up...

See if this helps.

This will keep you from having to worry about making another account for the service to run under. It's slightly less secure but I would imagine you don't mind giving all your home computers access to your shares.

Also, you might need to check on this setting, it sounds like that could be causing your problem too.

Is this really correct & new recordings are getting saved to those places? Did you type that in or browse to it in the SageTV UI? The UNC path would be something like \\<PC name>\<share name>\<remainder of directory path>

If you browsed to it in the UI, it ought to be correct.

If I'm unsure of the actual UNC path, I use Windows Exporer's "My Network Places -> Entire Network" and find the location there.

Ok, so, it's recording to those directories with the UNC paths entered as the Recording Directories. So at least it works...unless it's recording to the old directories without using the new UNC paths (they are the only paths present in the Recording Directories). Anyone know why the Disk Space indicator in the Dynamic Menus would not be reporting correctly?

Exclamation

I am experiencing the same thing here. This does not only say the wrong Free and Used disk space in Nielm's Webserver, but I also see the same numbers in SageTV.

I am running:
  • Sage TV 6.2.10 in Service Mode
  • Java 6 Update 3
  • Windows XP
  • Default STV
I have 5 drives that I record to and are as follows.
In Windows it shows the following:

D: Total 298 GB, Free 49.7 GB
E: Total 186 GB, Free 140 GB
F: Total 298 GB, Free 139 GB
G: Total 298 GB, Free 166 GB
H: Total 298 GB, Free 181 GB

This is a total of 1378 GB, and Total Free of 675.7. The only thing on these drives are shows that have been recorded by SageTV, and nothing else, not even Imported Shows.

When I add each drive to SageTV individually it shows the following:

D: Free 42.22 GB, Used 13.82 GB
E: Free 131.21 GB, Used 48.76 GB
F: Free 120.86 GB, Used 62.87 GB
G: Free 158.29 GB, Used 34.12 GB
H: Free 174.42 GB, Used 68.54 GB

Both Sage and Nielm's Webserver shows Used 223.90 GB, and Available 627 GB. For Auto-Delete Recordings: 96 recordings using 255.04 GB.

It should say that I have closer to 700 GB being used. I have a total of 553 recordings consistenting of mostly SD Analog shows, with about a dozen or less HD shows.

Does anyone have any idea of why this is happening or how to fix this issue?

Any help will be appreciated,
Protoman
