Confused about HD Hardware Requirements

I am just finishing my SageTV HTPC equipped with two HD and two SD tuners. I don't yet own any HD TVs. I plan to upgrade sometime next year. When I heard that the HD extenders were coming out, I held off buying an extender. I figured it would be better to just wait and invest in the HD. It says that a TV with an HD tuner is required. Is that just to play back HD content or is that for all content?

An HD tuner is required in your TV if you want your TV to be able to tune in digital signals via antenna or QAM cable by itself, with no other external tuners.

If you are going to supply your tv with an already tuned digital channel, such as an HD cable box, HD satellite, or a Sage solution, you don't need an HD tuner in the TV. Any HD-ready TV or HDTV will be able to display HD content, its just that an HD-ready TV would not be able to tune in digital content by itself, since it does not have a digital tuner.

Thanks, that's all I needed to know. Perhaps SageTV should be more clear when listing the hardware requirements. Some of us take that stuff literally.

It's right on the home page and the product page in the requirements.

It looks like it is an asterisk reference, example:

In one place it says: Watch and pause live HDTV*

Down below, it says: *Requires HD TV Tuner

To me, an asterisk like that means to look below to see what the clarification is for that reference, so it means that an HD TV tuner is required to watch and pause live HDTV. Or, if you notice the asterisk item first, look above to see what the asterisk refers to.

OK, I see what you mean,
Quote:
*Requires HD TV Tuner

It requires an HD TV tuner, but where?

I could see how that could be confusing. I know exactly what that meant, but could not even explain it my self.

Maybe something like * Requires HD Tuner Card, but then how do you account for external tuners lke the HDHR. SOmething like *Requires HD tuner in PC won't work as well, what about the MAC-heads

I usually skip over all the hype and go straight to the requirements first. Even after I read the description it didn't register that I only needed the HD tuner to watch HD.

How about:

"Requires an HD Tuner controlled by SageTV."
