Help!! Motherboard died....

As luck would have it, the day I receive my extender in the mail is the day my motherboard dies on my server I couldnt find another board of the same type so I had to order a different kind. I have backups of my c: drive and it is still in tact as well as my 3 recording drives. Any suggestions on the best way to get everything back to the way it was on a different motherboard?

How similar is the new motherboard? Same basic chipset (esp disk interface)? If so, hook up the old components and just boot. Windows may have tol load some new drivers, but if the CPU architecture and chipset are similar, it should go fine.

Otherwise, do a windows repair install.

Thx

In my experience you've got a 50-50 chance the computer will boot properly on the new motherboard without doing a repair install. I've had things work perfectly and then I've had it blue screen when booting off the new board. Just take your chances. If it doesn't boot do a repair install (officially called an in-place upgrade by Microsoft).

On the rare occasion a repair install will stall in the middle of the installation. In that case you'd have to either install over the existing Windows or do a parallel install. Which one you do is really up to you. At that point all that's really important is your data. If that happens I just get the system bootable, backup the data, and do a complete clean install. It's not worth trying to clean up all the old crap from your previous installation.

New board has same chipset, just Biostar instead of Asus
