Closed captions won't turn off!

I'm been using Sage since v2 but I've run into a problem that has me stumped.

I just put together a new system and I'm running Sage 6.3.5 with the default stv. I have a Hauppage 1800 and a Hauppage 250. I'm tuning QAM over the 1800. For some reason, I can't get the closed captioning to turn off. In fact, I can't even find the option in the settings. I'm not 100% sure, but the problem seems to only affect the HD stations since I haven't seen it on any SD stations. However, I'm not sure which card is being used when I watch SD, the 250, or the analog tuner on the 1800. Is there any way to tell?

At any rate, the problem seems to be related to the mpeg2 video decoder filter, since when I change that the captions also change. One setting gives normal captions, another gives random characters.

Any thoughts?

If you shut down Sage and go into the sage.properties and/or sageclient.properties files, there is a line cc_option_enabled=, that, if set to true will allow you to enable/disable captions in the Options Pop-up menu.

If you are using the default UI, You can to go into the recording info screen for the recording and see what tuner recorded it. It should say "encoded by ...."

Some of the decoders can properly display digital captions (WinDVD) and some do gibberish (PowerDVD). Pretty much all hte DVD-capable decoders can do analog captions. Get the option to turn on/off captions and you should be set.

Jack's instructions should allow you to turn off CC. I, for one, would be interested in finding out if the 1800 can pass along the CC info in analog (CC has to be supported in the drivers before sage or a decoder can use it)

Jack, you should try PDVD again. After reading your initial post on getting some CC with it, I gave it a shot. I've been getting nearly perfect captions with the PDVD decoder ever since I turned off the external CC plugin. I've only had trouble with captions on a recording of The War from PBS - overwriting lines and captions not refreshing, but PBS captions have always been more hit or miss on analog as well for me.
