HD Extender HDMI sound output issues

When I first hooked up my HD extender, I had to use the optical audio out (with HDMI for video). I recently upgraded my receiver, and have switched to using HDMI for both audio and video. When hooked to the receiver, the audio either does not work at all, or cuts in for a second, pops or hisses, and goes out.

In order to narrow down possible causes, I have:
-Tried all HDMI ports on the receiver (audio cuts out)
-Tried the same HDMI ports on the receiver with my XBOX360 (audio works fine)

This leads to me believe that the HD Extender is having difficulty outputting the audio for HDMI. But, here's the kicker: If I plug the HD Extender directly into the TV's HDMI port, audio and video work fine! This is the part that throws me off. When plugged into the receiver, it seems like the audio signal is overloading somehow, and causing the sound to cut out like it does.

Another thing I've noticed is that with the latest firmware updates (12/21 and 12/26), the audio takes a few seconds to start in after I begin playing anything.

Has anyone else had symptoms like this?

Since updating to 12/26, I noticed that my audio sometimes doesn't start at all (HDMI). I have to power off and restart the Extender and then the sound comes back.

I am using the optical output, and after the latest firmware upgrade, the audio from the HDMI is on, no matter what output I choose. I had to turn the volume on TV(where the HDMI is connected) off, because it would make loud pops everytime a show started or stopped. The optical seems to play without issues.

This sounds like what I am experiencing (with the popping). I have also attempted to go back to using just the optical audio out, but when I have it hooked up to the receiver, no sound comes out. I wonder if the receiver can't decide which to play if both the optical and HDMI audio are active at the same time.

I just wanted to add that I am experiencing the potentially damaging popping until such time as I start playing a media stream.

Its as if the audio (I'm using the optical port) floats until such time as an audio stream starts.

I have two of the Media Extenders hooked up to some pretty expensive speakers and it worrys me just what damage it could be causing.
