4x3 Standard Def isnt full frame 4x3
I just got SageTV set up last night with my (2) HVR-1600 cards. When I watch anything that is SD I get the 4x3 pillar boxes (normal), but inside the 4x3 frame, the picture has another small vertical black bar (about .75 inch on my 32" lcd) on the right side. It looks almost as if my picture is shifted to the left a little. How do I get rid of this? Only happens on SD Cable, not in HD
thanks |

If I understand you correctly, you probably can't get rid of it.
Its most likely there in the original broadcast and is normally hidden by the TV's overscan. The outermost edges of the broadcast can contain all kinds of stuff like weird color bars, white flashing lines (CC data), or like you've got, video that doesn't cover the entire broadcast area. The broadcasters expect that a normal TV has 5-10% overscan so they don't have to perfectly format the video to the screen. The overscan will hide the errors for the broadcaster.

Jack--
Can you confirm which INPUT on your card your using when you see the black lines? Is it the analog/svid input or the ATSC/QAM input? If it's the analog input then the problem would be an overscan issue with the video drive--if it's the atsc input, it's a simple matter of aspect-ratio correction on 4:3. I have HVR-1600's as well. On the analog side the video/overscan correction is correct with the aspect on "source". On the atsc tuner, any "4x3" digital broadcasts have the bars like you mentioned above. (16x9 digital broadcasts are fine) So, I modified the 4x3 aspect option & adjusted the overscan to fill the screen. Does this help? |

osburnfamily,
I don't have a 1600. I was just explaining to the OP that minor issues with the edges of a recording are not uncommon. That .75" black bar could easily have been hidden in a normal TV's overscan. On my system, I use Source for all 16x9 content and "true" 4x3 content (that way I get pillar boxes on the sides, but keep the image undistorted). For 16x9 content that is broadcast in 4x3 (widescreen stuff in SD), If left in Source will "postage stamp" the video with the original widescreen letterboxes and the pillar boxes since it is 4x3. For that, I use the "4x3" aspect ratio and zoom in 133% horiz/vert to zoom in enough to hide the postage stamping without distorting the video. THis is on a 16x9 set, settings for a 4x3 set may be different.

Cool that overscanning fixed it for you.
I assumed that you had a 16x9 TV based on your description of the problem. In order for you to hide that "extra" bar, you would need to stretch the video 133% horizontally (to hide the pillar bars + the extra bar) to hide it. Did you also stretch it 133% vertically (hiding a lot of the top and bottom of the video) to keep the aspect ratio the same, or did you distort the picture by just doing a horizontal stretch?

OK, just to let you know that the aspect ratio settings are adjustable for each aspect option. If pick Source and adjust a setting to 107%, when you go to Fill, the setting will be at its default, not 107%. The same goes for 4x3 and 16x9, each ratio setting can have its own adjustmnets.

How can I adjust the overscan settings on a TV that's using a MediaMVP?

As far as I know, it is not possible with an MVP.
