MVP DOA?

Hi, folks. First post.

I have had Sage running on my PC for over a week now, and really like the application. As a two-year TiVo user, I really appreciate the flexibility that this solution offers.

This evening, I brought home a shiny new Hauppauge MVP, hoping to expand my great initial experience out to a TV via thin client. I enabled MVP/Placeshifter in Sage, and put in the license key. Server has been re-started.

Here is my issue: When I connected and powered up the MVP, I got absolutely no indication of life at all. I know that it has power, as I have tested the outlet, and I can hear the transformer making a bit of noise when it is plugged in, but NOTHING at all seems to happen with the MVP.

Is the MVP supposed to do anything at all when it is plugged in? LEDs? Any noises at all? Just trying to figure out if it is DOA.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Shaun

Edit: Sorry -- forgot to mention that I see no activity on the TV either...

When you power up the MVP, do you see the MVP wallpaper on your TV? Does the scrollbar go across the bottom of the screen? Are you using a wired MVP?

I had a problem with my MVP where the initial scrollbar did not finish the last segment, and the MVP would not finish booting. I had to sent it in to Hauppauge, and they fixed the problem.

You should see the MVP wallpaper when you power up the system and watch your TV. After the initial scrollbar gets done, the screen will prompt you to hit the "OK" button to see your network parameters. Make sure the necessary ports are open in your software and hardware firewalls between the SageTV server and the MVP. The MVP IP address does float around a bit, since it is DHCP, so make sure the firewall rules cover any IP address drifting. I discovered my MVP would work, but was not reliable if the ports were not opened.

If you are able to get past the network configuration screen, you should then see a "loading application" scrollbar screen, followed by the same SageTV screen that you would see on your computer, when you launch SageTV on your computer.

If you do get it working and the audio is low, there are postings about a modification to increase the audio of the MVP.

If you get the MVP to boot up, but does not work with SageTV, then try disabling the SageTV software and try using the Hauppauge software to see if that works.

If you cannot get through the MVP booting, then you will most likely have to send the MVP unit back. I think the MVP warranty time might be two years. I think you have to e-mail Hauppauge before you send it back.

Thanks for the response, Dave.

None of what you describe happens. I see nothing at all on the screen, and I see no indication of any kind on the MVP. It looks completely dead, which it probably is...

Are there are lights, sounds or other indications from the MVP itself (not through the TV) that would let me know that it is at least alive?

Thanks, again.

Shaun

You could look at the LAN lights on the back on the unit. Mine are yellow and green. When you first apply power the green one flashes while it is trying to get an internet number from the DHCP server. Both lights should be on when the the MVP is up. Mine also has a red light that comes on when power is applied. It flashes when the remote is used.

carlgar,

Thanks -- that clears things up completely. It is definitely DOA. I can't say I'm happy, but at least I know for sure!

Cheers,
Shaun
