I like the approach SageTV takes with Timeshifting/Recording. It solves the issue of wanting to record something you hadn't planned. Snapstream, for example uses the other method of timeshifting, where unless you're recording, it causes a problem when you want to record from live tv. In their case if you start watching a show at 9:00 and decide at 9:15 you want to record it for archival purposes etc....., Snapstream starts recording at 9:15. This is no good for me. Although it's a rare occasion I would do this, it's good to know I can.
IMHO it doesn't matter if my harddrive is completely full except for whatever space I told Sage to save. I would rather have that than miss out on all of the recording features. My box will be dedicated to TV and Sage, so it would just be wasted space anyways. mikejaner mikejaner

Im not sure if you (or I) understand what he is stating. Its fine the way that sage handles recordings, just the way that it lists them is the problem. In "sage recordings", I personally dont want to scroll through 20,000 partial recordings, etc...in order to get to the programs which I actually scheduled to record.
Am I correct in my assumption? I. Quote:

Me ? Yes, timeshifting is needed. Yes, I don't want it in the recordings listing. Also unless I missed a setting, I don't want my drive filling up with those files either.

OK, now I see. Yes, there is a setting where you can tell SageTV to only use a certain amount of space. You can also tell it to use all but 20 GB for example, so space is not an issue in this disscussion. I do agree where you say you don't want 20,000 partial recordings in your Sage Recordings.

Maybe when you go to the Sage Recordings screen there could be tabs on the left. They could be All Recordings (default), Manual Recordings, Favorite Recordings, Intelligent Recordings, LiveTV Recordings.
That way you could filter what you want to see. Having them on the HD is no big deal as Sage will clean it up as needed, but we do need a way to filter them better. |

Interresting idea. I wouldnt mind that, but I would definately want it to default to something such as "scheduled recordings". All other sub-categories listed in priority by normal usage.

The perfect solution is to have:
1) Recorded Shows Folder - Only shows manually selected go here. 2) Timeshift Shows Folder 3) Intelligent Recording If the recorded shows directory was split out into the 3 folders mentioned above a lot of problems would be saved for users. It would also allow us to manage the storage requirements of each folder and of course would make navigating the shows much, much easier! Carlo PS The current way timeshifting is done is one of the reason I don't use SageTV as much as I use Snapstream. For the life of me, I can't find any negative reasons not to implement the above. |

I love the Timeshifting in Sage. It is currently one of the reasons I don't use BTV. BTV is way too limited. I would like a way to hide them from normal view though.
It seems the issue is not how the files are stored but how they are presented to the user. I can see a benefit of setting limits, but again that can be done without different storage locations. |

Let me clarify what I mean. I think SageTV is much more powerful in it's ability to TimeShift then BTV, no Question about it.
However, trying to find a show you manually recorded in the mix of manual, timeshifted shows and shows recorded by Intelligent Recording can be done right hard. I just can't do this on my machine with thousands of shows. I would also like them broken up into seperate folders so that you can work outside of sage (i.e. explorer) on your shows. Seperate folders would also give us the ability to manage them more fully. Carlo |

Man, yeah if you are working outside of Sage I would want folders. I admit, I use Sage for all my viewing and don't think I have looked at the file system on my HTPC for months. It would suck doing that.
That is probably a holdover from Sage being developed as HTPC oriented. They designed it to be used like a set-top box (probably even to be embedded at some point). |
