Upconverting for HD100?

I know just enough about this media center stuff to be dangerous. So, if what I am asking here is a bit nonsensical, I apologize. I am also not a programmer, so I guess this question falls into the camp of idle curiosity about what is possible.

Is it possible/what would be involved to have SageTV upconvert (transcode an upconverted format?) of say a ripped DVD to the HD100?

For those that have/use DVD players that can upconvert DVDs, is it really worth it?

IIRC the HD100 automatically upconverts to the resolution you specify in the video output configuration.

Yes, and the upconverting is done on hardware on the HD100 without using precious cpu cycles on your video server.

SD broadcast look fantastic in 1080p or 1080i!

It really depends on your display, I think it used to be more worth it than it is today. With the video processors in TVs getting better and better (especially the proliferation of Reon VX, Realta HQV, and Genum VXP level processors), combined with digital interconnects to the display, it's getting harder and harder to make a case for an upconverting player, especially if the player offers "native" output.

FWIW, the processing on the HD100 is good, but nothing to write home about. I think the Pixelworks processor in my IN76 does a slightly better job of deinterlacing than the HD100. Now, the Realta HQV powered Gefen TV Scaler Pro, ~$500, that could be a killer piece for the price (the only other Realta HQV processors are well over $2k).

Or, blue-skying, now that Sigma Designs has a aquired Genum, maybe their VXP processing will make it into a future Sigma processor an maybe Sage could use that in an HD200
