Problems playing MP3 and Divx files on the HD-100

Hello,

Newbie here hoping for some assistance. I just received my HD-100 and am having problems getting it to play back my MP3 and Divx files. When I try to play them on the HD-100 I get this error:

there was a playback error in playback. details: sage.playbackexception

I can play these files with no issues on my SageTV server. I am running SageTV v6.3.5 on the server end. I tried re-booting my server PC and the HD-100 but this did not help. Everything else appears to be working fine on the HD-100. I can watch live TV, record shows, access and play the web content, etc. By the way, I watched an HD recording of LOST on the HD-100 last night and it looked unreal. It looked so good I could have sworn I was watching it live...

Anyway, I searched this forum but I have yet to find a solution to this problem. If anyone can point me in the right direction I would really appreciate the help.

I'm playing mp3 and divx files just fine using the HD100 so I know it works.

Sounds to me like a codec problem of some kind. Can you play those same files okay through SageTV on the SageTV server?

Brent,

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I can play these files with no issues through SageTV on the SageTV server. I remember reading somewhere that any file the SageTV server can play should be playable on the HD-100 so I'm perplexed as to why I'm getting this error.

How are these accessed? are they located on the sage server or on another pc using UNC/Network mapped drives?

All of my MP3 and DiVX files are located on the Sage Server itself on a dedicated hard drive. The videos and music files all show up fine in their respective menus. As soon as I try to play a file it just sits there for @30 seconds or so and then I get the error.

The HD-100 should be able to play these files natively right? Is there anything on the server end that can be adjusted?

Help me please! I'm pulling my hair out on this one...

More bad news. My kids just tried watching a Blues Clues video from the Online menu. They selected a video and it reports:

The clip must be downloaded before playback. Please wait...

Then:

Done

The message just stays there for a bit and then:

There was a Playback Error in playback. Details: sage.PlaybackException

I'm able to play Google videos fine. I'm guessing that a lot of the online videos are not going to play. Can someone tell me what is going on here?

Try installing the v6.3.10 update that was relesed today. I had no problem w/any of the Blues Clues videos.

Andy,

So you think the cause of my issues is on the server side, not the media extender itself?

Okay, I just installed the v6.3.10 update but no dice. The extender still will not play any of my music, my videos and much of the online content I have tried to watch. I really don't know where to go from here so I've submitted a support request. Hopefully I can get this resolved soon. Thanks to everyone that responded.

Did you update the firmware on the HD100 when you first installed it?

If you go to the System Info screen on the HD100 (from the Main Menu, use the Info button on the remote), what does it list as the SageTV and STV versions?

Is there an active firewall that might be blocking anything?

Did you say recordings are playing?

You might try enabling debug logging to see if the log shows anything important when you try to play something that doesn't work.

Yes.

Software Version:SageTV V6.3.10.166
Java Version:1.6.0-rc
Current STV File:SageTV3.xml (Version 6.3.10.2 February 26,2008)

Yes, Vista Firewall is active. There are SageTV exceptions that were automatically added by SageTV when it was installed. I also manually added the 2 required extender ports listed in the SageTV manual.

Yes, recordings are playing fine.

I will try this and report back the results.

I enabled debug logging and then tried playing an MP3 file on the extender. The file would not play and I received the usual error:

there was a playback error in playback. details: sage.playbackexception

Here's what the log reported:

Sat 3/8 10:23:58.495 java.net.SocketTimeoutException: Read timed out
Sat 3/8 10:23:58.496 VideFrame had an error loading the file. It must abort the file load.
Sat 3/8 10:23:58.497 Closing down MiniPlayer
Sat 3/8 10:23:58.497 processOptionsMenu optionsMenu=default:null|OptionsMenu:ErrorMessage
Sat 3/8 10:23:58.497 closeDriver0()

That sounds like a release candidate for Java RE 1.6.0. Mine says 1.6.0_04. If that is the case I would update to 1.6.0_05 which is last version. Reboot and make sure SageTV on server is now using correct Java.

Just got everything working. RTFM was the answer. I had added the Extender firewall ports but not the SageTV ports listed in the manual. I assumed (you know what they say about that) that the SageTV firewall exception took care of these ports. Wrong! Thanks again for everyone's help. Now I can go back to enjoying the extender...
