Media Extender refuses to play .mpg files (PlaybackException: ERROR (-3,0x0)

SageTV will play certain .mpg files correctly from my video import directory just fine, while others give the message "There was a Playback Error in playback. Details: sage.PlaybackException: ERROR (-3,0x0): There was a problem accessing the filesystem for playback."

SageTV plays all of my music videos from my import directory fine on my main theater pc. It plays them fine via the placeshifter on my laptop (on both my home network and over the internet). It plays them find on my laptop via the client.

When I try to play these MPG files through the Hauppauge MVP, i get that wierd error message. All AVI files play, all FLY files play, but only about 50% of the MPG fiiles will play through the HopHog.

What's the deal?

Yes, the import directory is a share folder, but it's mapped directly as hard drive, not as a share drive. I dont run SageTV as a service either.

Just to add some more info...

For some reason, I still can't watch the videos but I can...

1. Delete them.

2. Convert them.

If i use sagetv to convert them to AVI files, I can watch them with no problem. It imports them to the same folder.

I have no idea what happened though. I used to be able to watch these files and then they started dropping like flies. It seems like only .mpg files are affected. It can't be a permission thing or I wouldn't be able to convert them...

Anyone have any ideas on this? I'm using it as a program, not as a service.

Well, I finally upgraded to 6.5.9 today. I still can't play .mpg (MPEG1) files over my SD Media Extender. They play fine on my pc via windows media player, they play fine on my laptop using the client, they play fine on my laptop using the place shifter, but they will not play over my hauppehauge sd media extender.

My media extender will play:

1. Recorded shows
2. DVDs
3. Any AVI, TS, WMV, etc...

It will NOT play mpg files that are 'mpeg1". I noticed that it plays any files that the transcoder is needed to play. When it attemps to play an mpeg1 file, i dont see the transcoder attempt to turn on (on my server). Something tells me that there is something wrong with the mpg decoder for mpeg1 files built in to the SD media extender...

Version 6.2.x used to give me an error, 6.5.x just goes to a black screen then back to the video selection menu...

Have you tried loading up the Hauppauge software for the MediaMVP on a pc and trying to play the MPEG1 videos thru it directly? The MediaMVP is supposed to play Mpeg1 and Mpeg2 videos natively so Sage does not need to do any transcoding for Mpeg1 videos. This is probably why the transcoder is not kicking in. However, it could be that the Mpeg1 video maybe use a strange resolution or be corrupt and the Hauppauge MediaMVP just can't play it at all. So it may not be a Sage issue, but a file issue and/or MediaMVP issue. This is why I recommend loading the MediaMVP software on your PC just to rule out the MediaMVP's ability to play it. If with the software you can play back the video, then I would go back to Sage to see about the problem.

Also, is there a reason you just haven't converted those Mpeg1's to Mpeg2? Are you still adding to your Mpeg1 collection or are these old videos? And if you are adding to your collection, how are you getting them? Maybe I am not going to the same places as you are, but there aren't too many devices left out there that record in Mpeg1 and not too many websites that do video hosting that use Mpeg1 either (I can't think of one at this point to be honest).

You might try checking the permissions on the files. Are they set differently for the ones that will play and those that won't?

I had a similar problem on a shared folder a ways back and it turned out to be the permissions.

Good luck,
Chris

Resolved

Well, I upgraded to an HD-200 and I was still having the problem. I added a new 1TB external drive, copied all my files over to it, and now all of the MPGs are working again...

I'm not sure what the problem was, I didnt change any effective permissions. All of my files had exactly the same permissions, but once I moved them to the new hard drive and remapped the folders, they all worked...
