Do you have to use the usb-uirt with this or can you just have the channel change through serial controller on your on your cable stb and then the signal will be decode on the fly?

You can use any channel changing solution that is supported by Sage and your STB. The HD PVR provides an IR blaster, but people have been having mixed results getting it working. If you are not using the included IR blaster, then your other options would be USB-UIRT, serial, or firewire.

If you try the included IR-Blaster, I suggest the following:

1) If you're using Vista, don't run SageTV in service mode or it won't be able to change channels.

2) Don' thave any other Hauppauge hardware in the machine (at least during setup of this device). Thsi will eliminate a lot of variables.

I think that most people having trouble with the included IR-Blaster are gettingthe "hardware not found" message. If it actually finds your hardware and controls your set-top-box in the configuration program, I think you're good to go at that point.
