If you are using the 500mce for OTA broadcasts, then you will need to do something to convert the digital signals. I would recommend upgrading to 6.4 and getting something like the HD HomeRun. It will probably be cheaper than getting digital converters for the 500mces. You won't need anything if are recording from a cable system.

I think a little clarification is needed here...

Your PVR-500mce is an Analog or Composite-In only device, so no direct digital.

Your continued ability to receive TV programs directly from your cable depends on the future plans of your cable system. Most providers have said they will continue to broadcast *some* channels in the analog format. Many providers will move their non-local programming into digital.

If one of your programs you want to record is moved to digital then you'll have a couple of choices:
1. Rent a Set Top Box and connect the Composite-Out or S-Video to your PVR-500mce card.
2. Upgrade SageTV software and install a Digital tuner card for ATSC (OverTheAir) and ClearQAM (unencrypted Cable) digital reception (HDHR has been suggested).

If the stations you want are encrypted (most are) then your only option is #1.
