Closed Captions?

any chance of supporting closed captions? kind of like how intervideo windvr does?

I'm not sure if the Hauppauge cards will support it, nor am I sure what the MPEG2 compression does to the blanking information. I seem to remember that it strips that info off when it crops it for digitize b/c the frame is 480, not 486.

I would imagine that the only way to get this to work would be to record this information to a text file on digitize and attach it to the mpeg file. I should add this isn't easy to do...

The Hauppauge cards does NOT prevent this for sure, since I know for a fact that WinXP Media Center using Hauppauge 250/350 cards support close captioning quite nicely. As for the MPEG2 file issue, I am not so sure. WinXP MCE doesn't store recordings directly into MPEG2 but rather uses their own DVR-MS format, which (as I understand it) is basically a wrapper around the core MPEG2 file with some added meta data.

So technically speaking, it is possible. Easy or hard ? I can't say since I know nothing about how CC support is implemented ... all I know is that this is a very desireable feature for me

PrinceOfEgypt - you mentioned earlier in this thread that Intervideo WinDVR does this ... do you know if they record in straight MPEG2 or in some kind of enveleope format like DVR-MS ? If they do record in straight MPEG2, do they generate a side file for each subtitle stream ?

The files on the hard drive are not mpegs, so i would assume taht it's some sort of wrapper like with media center.

Some of the information there may be out of date, but it shows it is being considered, though there isn't a solution yet.

The PVR250/350 can handle closed captioning. They can even insert them into the MPEG2 stream.. See: http://www.shspvr.com/forum/viewtopi...tccindvd#23669

Also, you can read out the CC seperately if you like.
