Post Setting blackstrip to not be black? (burn-in)

I've been using my HD100 extender to watch a ton of old shows. In particular my son has discovered our "Disney Treasures" DVDs of Donald Duck cartoons, so we ripped them to the hard drive for him to watch.

The problem is that we have a 16x9 plasma TV. After a month or so, I've noticed the bars burnt into the sides of the screen. I was able to run the television's utilities to get rid of it, but a month or so later I can see the burn-in again. I've set the cable box to set the side strips to grey (the middle of the grey scale) and the TV is smart enough to put up the grey strips when it gets a true 4x3 signal. Unfortunately the HD100 doesn't give it a 4x3 signal, it gives it a 16x9 signal with black strips.

Yes, I've tried the orbiting option, but it drives me crazy. Yes, it's not a horrible big deal since I can run the TV's utilities every couple of weeks to fix it. I'd just like to prolong it, because you have to admit that every time I have to do this it will get worse and worse. I was just wondering if there is an option on how to change the color of the black strips. This seems to be referred to as "blackstrip" in the options.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

Matt

By the orbiting option, do you mean the zoom? If you do use zoom, to have the 4:3 fill the screen to get rid of the bars is an option.

I know there are program out there that lets to re-encode the video to another format which allows you to change the aspect ratio. I don't know if this would allow you to add grey bars to the side. I uses grey to minimize burning. Maybe someone who's used handbrake or xvid can comment if those programs allowed to do this.

What about just using the fill option?

I am not seeing the screen where you can set this from an extender, but look at this setting in the properties file:

Code:
videoframe/video_bg_color=127,127,127
Color looks to be an rgb number?

I find the fill and stretch options distracting. It drives me crazy when the Food Network stretches its 4x3 video to 16x9.

I will try setting the video background color. Thank you!

This works on the regular SageTV server, but not on the media extender.

Thanks, though.

Did you try it in the extender properties file under ./clients?

I haven't myself.

The HD100 doesn't have an option for the video background color or for video orbiting.

I just use the HD100's ability to do nonlinear stretching to fill the screen with the middle mostly unstretched. There are custom AR modes on the forum (see the extender FAQs) or you can edit your own during playback.
