I just ordered an HD-PVR and it should be here by Friday. I will run a few tests and up them as soon as it is hooked up.
This is the first thing I did when I got my HD-PVR back in June or July or whenever that was.

There was zero difference in quality when both clips were played back on my PC (there were slight differences in black levels and color which could be easily adjusted for). But the original clip played back on my Comcast box looked better. Not dramatically, but noticeably.

This is why I continue to think its a decoder not a recording quality issue. Maybe Purevideo does it better than the Arcsoft decoders.

It's probalby not fair to compare 1080i to 1080p, but I guess seeing the difference in that too would be interesting.

Isn't there an exclusion for making a personal backup?

Actually the DMCA is very flexible when it comes to making personal backups.... You can make as many personal backups as you need as long as you don't circumvent the copy protection.

It's an interesting legal paradox.

From wikipedia:

Many American legal experts believe that under United States' Federal law, making a backup copy of a DVD-Video or an audio CD by a consumer is legal. Some feel this provision of United States law conflicts with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act prohibition of so-called "circumvention measures" of copy protections.

In 2006, the United States Library of Congress created an exemption that explicitly allows circumventing access control for certain educational purposes.[5]

In the noted "321" case, Federal District Judge Susan Illston, of the Northern District of California [6], ruled that the backup copies made with software such as DVD Decrypter are in fact legal but that distribution of the software used to make them is illegal. As of the date of this revision, neither the US Supreme Court nor the US Congress has taken definitive action on the matter.

Not to get too political, since I'm fairly certain a Republican president would've done the same, but... YEP! That's one of the wonderful things the Democrats did to us. Thanks for nothing, Bill!

Ars has a pretty good write-up on the next round of exemption meetings. I loved this particular part:

Quote:
If those hurdles weren't quite high enough, the law also requires that the Librarian considers whether DRM-encrusted works are available in non-DRMed formats. Thus it was that the Librarian struck down a request during the first rule-making to allow users to bypass the CSS encryption on DVDs—users wanted to watch the discs under Linux but were unable to "access" the content without circumvention. But the Librarian concluded that, because these movies were also available in analog format on VHS (!), there was a market mechanism for gaining access to the content without circumvention. No exemption.

Set up syncplicity
http://www.syncplicity.com

It's free, and you can use it to backup files to the interwebz. They let you provide URL's for files once they have synced with their servers.

I did set up the account and uploaded the files (6 hrs, ugg). Don't see how to obtain a url though. If anyone knows how to get the URL I would like to know so I can post it here.

You are right, I forgot that I have my DirecTV receiver locked in 1080i output. I was originally going to record something from a 1080i channel. Sorry. Would appreciate your opinion of video quality. I have trouble seeing any diference. I'll replace these with one minute recordings of two 720p or two 1080i sets Monday 10/13 if anyone desires.

It's really hard to say. I think the biggest difference I saw was the lower temporal resolution of 1080i

How did you record the OTA broadcast?
Can you pipe the output from the device capturing OTA into the HDPVR?

That way we'd be seeing the exact same stream from the same original source.

I don't think it would be accurate to compare OTA to a Satellite feed. Who knows what Directv does to the signal.

Though from what I saw they both looked pretty good. I preferred the OTA one though, there was something hard to describe about the 1080i one, but it may be from the fact that it was 1080i.

I recorded 2 clips of 2 minutes each. One from QAM HDHR and the other from STB through HD-PVR.
The sources are both 1080i, from the same channel and both are piped by the same Cable Co. (My only question is: Does the STB do any decoding or just pass it through the Component cables?)
I am almost done uploading the 1rst clip online and should be done with the 2nd in about an hour...

I am done uploading the 2 sample files. They contain some commercials and a college football highlights and game. I think this gives it a broad enough coparison.

Samples located here

My OTA tuner is the Haup 2250 so I can't feed it to the HD PVR. I do expect that there is some degredation as DirecTV captures the signal locally, Up/Downlinks it to Denver, Up/Downlinks it to my sat box and finally (my fault) it's uprezed to 1080i to the HD PVR for recording. All that said, the picture from the HD PVR is really good IMO.

Did your video card come with a 7-pin svideo to component adapter cable? Then you could feed your computer to the hd pvr

I just realized I have a receiver with a built in HiDef OTA tuner that has YPbPr outputs. I'll try that today in 720p on both OTAs (internal Hau 2250 and thru HD PVR) and post links later.

Here are links to 720p files for those of you with 720p monitors.
Both were done with OTA tuners ([1] OTA Haup 2250 [2] OTA LG tuner YPbPr > HD PVR).
EDIT: Both are 1 min long - easier to download.

links removed

dvd maniac in post #36 of this thread posted link to 2 sample 1080i files for those with 1080 monitors.
