VRM9 Artifact Problem/FF/RW Freezes Video

After a few weeks of observations and last night's complaint from my wife that the FF/RW was not working and the Video looked off, I decided to take a closer look.

System - AMD 5600 Dual Core, 4 Gig Main Mem, ATI3850, 2X2 Terabyate Raid0 (4X1TDrives). ASUS M2NE Mother Board, Snapstream Remote

Capture Card- Hauppauge 1800 with OTA ATSC capture

Sage - 6.4.8

Windows XP -32 SP2

VIDEO Segment - Mpeg2 16:9 720P@60FPS, AC3@48Khz, 5.1
Terminator Sarah Conner Chronical's

Symptoms
1. Large Noticable Block Lines(Artifacts) while panning in different scenes.

2. Playback Freezes as a result of multiple FF or RW. The Video can only be unfrozen with 1 or 2 FF/RW

3. Black screen with audio only when video rendereer is set to overlay

The syptoms are present depending on setup/detailed setup/audio/video settings
All settings are held at default except Video Renderer and Video Decoder

Here is a table with closed captions off

Video Renderer---Video Decoder---Symp1--Symp2--Symp3
Default-----------default------------No------No------No--
Overlay-----------any decode -------?-------?-------Yes(all black screen)
VRM9 ------------Sagetv/acc--------yes-----no------no
VRM9-------------Cyberlink(PDVD7) --yes-----no------no
VRM9-------------ATI MPEG Decode--yes-----no------no

Here is a table with closed captions set to CC1

Video Renderer---Video Decoder---Symp1--Symp2--Symp3
Overlay-----------any decode -------?-------?-------Yes(all black screen)
VRM9 ------------Sagetv/acc--------yes-----no------no
VRM9-------------Cyberlink(PDVD7) --yes-----yes-----no
VRM9-------------ATI MPEG Decode--yes-----yes-----no

So there is no way for me to see artifact free video without the default settings. I supect that I have some setting on thee ATI 3850 Set wrong.

Please note that I am using the default STV and for CC I changed the properties file line cc_option_enabled=true.

OTA SD and HD Captions work fine except I need either VRM9 or Overlay to work.

I would really like some advice before I run off and beg for support from Sage.

It might be something stupid like the 3850 has known bug or something like that.

Tearing not Artifacts

As I continue to read here I could easily say the artifacts I am seeing could also be classified as tearing.

If it is tearing you may want to enable FSE (Full Screen Exclusive) to see if that helps.

Thanks Gerry and

Here's Link I found that explains tearing
http://hifi-india.blogspot.com/2006/...-how-do-i.html

I am using a VIZIO 42 Inch HDTV 1080P and a Samsung 1024 Monitor
The Vizio is an extended display to the Samsung.
The ATI card outputs 720P@60HZ to Vizio and 1024P@60 HZ to the Samsung. The max refresh rate is 85HZ on the Vizio and 75Hz on the Samsung.

By Full Screen Mode I think you mean
I just drag Sage to My extended Vizio display and hit the upper right button and SAGE becomes full screen and the VIDEO takes up the whole display. I still see the tearing.

I am pretty sure now that this is mismatch between my refresh rate and the source frame rate. I was able to make the tearing go away by changing the Vizio to a 1024 display early this morning but did not understand why.

I will find out tonight.

No. I mean go to Detailed Setup-Advanced-Use Full Screen Exclusive mode. It's the same mode 3D games use to take over control of the video surface. This mode will sometimes eliminate or reduce the tearing.

Need to check that out

Hello again Gerry,

Thanks for FSE tip. Too bad I didn't check my email last night

I was on the computer last night for 3 hours running through all my ATI CCC settings and discovered that CCC has a Theatre Mode that works like FSE but locks out SAGE Menus. This mode did remove the tearing but is unussable. I will try the SAGE FSE mode tonight.

Kind Regards,

Tony

VRM9 Still has tearing

I changed

setup details/advanced - use full screen exclusive mode enabled

This had no effect on the tearing which is what I saw in another post where everyone with and newer ATI Card like 2600 or 3850 or 3870 all had the same probleem with tearing with a VRM9 renderer

The good news is that I got Closed Captions to work in overlay mode but they are very big compared to VRM9.

Now I am going to make ssome reccomened changes to my Video Card Settings and see if this final tweak helps.

But thanks to Big Ger for the assistance
