Java IDE?

If I understand the situation correctly, this won't be off-topic for long...

I'm wondering if the Java guys and gals out there can recommend an open source Java IDE to a C# guy.

I'm trying to decide between NetBeans and Eclipse as a place to start.

If "free" is a requirement, then those are your options. If not, then Intellij Idea is unbeatable.

In my old office, the developers were a mix of folks using JBuilder, Notepad, vi, and emacs. One day someone picked up a copy of Idea (version 2 at the time, I believe) and over the period of about 6 months, every single person in the office switched; even the hard core "no IDE is better than emacs" guys were eventually converted.

I pay $200 a year to keep an up to date copy on my desktop and it's the best investment in productivity I've ever made.

Thanks for the tip... I do think free is a requirement until I get my feet wet, but I will keep that in mind if I get more serious/knowledgeable about Java in the future.

It came from someone who has never seen anything other than what appears in the public boards.

Thats fine but it really doesn't answer my question Why are you looking for an IDE package? BTW I do recommend Eclipse its much better and more community supported.

It's based on speculation, not facts. It may very well be wrong. At this point, I wish I hadn't speculated "out loud."

"Speculating" is fine. I just was wondering if you had more info than I had on the situation. I too have often "speculated" the same thing. I have given up asking for pictures/proof because frankly it will not change the situation, whatever will be released will be released regardless if I know about it today or a year from now when its actually available.

Guess only time will tell,

hey why is there such a big issue over studio anyway?
Is it going to user friendly or needing programming?
Is there some big secret that developers only want some of their purchasers to know about and not others?
This seems very strange not to give clear and concise answers to questions like this
Must be a power issue, huh?????
(WOW over a piece of software)

Have you never heard of an NDA? It's standard practice not to disclose the details of a product during its development to the whole world.

Well just seems we are the customers and furthermore the beta testers and for some reason I doubt that anyone without a hardware encoder tv tuner is going to care
Are you trying to hide it from Snapstream("BeyondTV")?
I guess it seems you are giving that guy a hard time when he is a customer and a tester of the software
Hey not a programmer here so not really caring at this point but will enjoy it when it comes I am sure
Just having fun with version 2 here
